    Abstract

    Disclosed herein is a power supply system for a transport refrigeration unit (TRU). The power supply system comprises a battery having a battery management system (BMS). The BMS configured to enable a supply of electrical power to the battery or a supply of electrical power from the battery to the TRU, a generator electrically connected to the battery and the TRU, and a controller connected to the TRU, the generator, and the BMS, wherein the controller comprises a processor with access to a memory storing instructions executable by the processor, which causes the controller to monitor electrical power consumption of the TRU; monitor electrical power generated by the generator, and enable the supply of electrical power from the generator to the battery and/or powering the TRU based on the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the electrical power generated by the generator.

    Claims

    1. A power supply system for a transport refrigeration unit (TRU), the power supply system comprising: a battery having a battery management system (BMS), the BMS configured to selectively supply of electrical power to the battery or a supply of electrical power from the battery to the TRU; a generator electrically connected to the battery and the TRU, wherein the generator is configured to generate electrical power based on, at least in part, a dedicated engine of the TRU, and wherein the electrical power is distributed either to the TRU, or the battery, or simultaneously to the TRU and the battery; and a controller connected to the TRU, the generator, and the BMS, wherein the controller comprises a processor with access to a memory storing instructions executable by the processor, which causes the controller to: monitor electrical power consumption of the TRU; monitor electrical power generated by the generator; and transmit a control signal to the BMS to supply the electrical power from the generator to the battery and/or power the TRU based on the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the electrical power generated by the generator.

    2. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the power supply system further comprises: a first set of sensors to monitor the electrical power consumed by one or more components of the TRU in real-time; and a second set of sensors to monitor the electrical power generated by the generator.

The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the controller comprises a charging operation mode in which the controller is configured to actuate one or more switches electrically connected with the BMS to supply the electrical power from the generator to the battery upon detecting the electrical power generated by the generator to be more than the electrical power consumption of the TRU.

    4. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to control the BMS based on the electrical power generated by the generator, the electrical power consumption of the TRU, and a state of charge (SoC) of the battery.

    5. The power supply system of claim 4, wherein the electrical power supplied by the generator is determined based on a difference between the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the SoC of the battery.

The power supply system of claim 1, wherein upon detecting the electrical power generated by the generator to be less than the electrical power consumption of the TRU, the controller is configured to operate in a power supply mode in which the controller actuates one or more switches electrically connected with the BMS to supply the electrical power from the battery to the TRU.

The power supply system of claim 1, wherein upon detecting the battery to be charged above a threshold level and the electrical power generated by the generator to be more than the electrical power consumption of the TRU, the controller is configured to operate in a power export mode in which the controller actuates one or more switches electrically connected with the BMS to supply electrical power from the battery to an external power source, while simultaneously recharging the battery via the generator to keep the battery at the threshold level.

    8. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the dedicated engine is a combustion engine that is operable to drive the generator to generate electrical power, wherein the dedicated engine is associated with the TRU or a container equipped with the TRU.

The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the system comprises one or more human-machine interfaces (HMI) in communication with the controller, the controller allows one or more users to: change between a charging operation mode, a power export mode, and a power import mode; and monitor one or more of the real-time electrical power consumption of the TRU, the electrical power generated by the generator, a state of charge (SoC) of the battery, and the electrical power supplied by the generator to the battery.

    10. A controller for a transport refrigeration unit (TRU), the controller being connected to the TRU, a battery, a generator, and a battery management system (BMS) of the battery, wherein the controller comprises: a processor coupled to a memory storing instructions executable by the processor, which causes the controller to: monitor electrical power consumption of the TRU; monitor electrical power generated by the generator, wherein the generator is configured to generate electrical power based on, at least in part, a dedicated engine of the TRU, and wherein the electrical power is distributed either to the TRU, or the battery, or simultaneously to the TRU and the battery; and transmit a control signal to the BMS to supply of electrical power from the generator to the battery and/or powering the TRU based on the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the electrical power generated by the generator.

    11. The controller of claim 10, wherein the controller comprises: a first set of sensors to monitor the electrical power consumed by one or more components of the TRU in real-time; and a second set of sensors to monitor the electrical power generated by the generator.

    12. The controller of claim 10, wherein the controller comprises a charging operation mode in which the controller is configured to actuate one or more switches electrically connected with the BMS to the supply the electrical power from the generator to the battery upon detecting the electrical power generated by the generator to be more than the electrical power consumption of the TRU.

    13. The controller of claim 12, wherein the controller is configured to controls the BMS based on the electrical power generated by the generator, the electrical power consumption of the TRU, and a state of charge (SoC) of the battery, wherein the electrical power supplied by the generator is determined based on a difference between the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the SoC of the battery.

    14. The controller of claim 10, wherein upon detecting the electrical power generated by the generator to be less than the electrical power consumption of the TRU, the controller is configured to operate in a power supply mode in which the controller actuates one or more switches electrically connected with the BMS to supply the electrical power from the battery to the TRU.

The controller of claim 10, wherein upon detecting the battery to be charged above a threshold level and the electrical power generated by the generator to be more than the electrical power consumption of the TRU, the controller is configured to operate in a power export mode in which the controller actuates one or more switches electrically connected with the BMS to supply the electrical power from the battery to an external power source, while simultaneously recharging the battery via the generator to keep the battery at the threshold level.

    16. The controller of claim 10, wherein the dedicated engine is a combustion engine that is operable to drive the generator to generate electrical power, wherein the dedicated engine is associated with the TRU or a container equipped with the TRU.

    17. The controller of claim 10, wherein the controller comprises a communication module operatively coupled to the controller, which enables the controller to establish a secured communication between the controller and one or more human-machine interface (HMI) associated with one or more users, wherein the controller allows one or more users to: change between a charging operation mode, a power export mode, and a power import mode; and monitor one or more of the real-time electrical power consumption of the TRU, the electrical power generated by the generator, a state of charge (SoC) of the battery, and the electrical power supplied by the generator to the battery.

    18. A method for power supply management in a transport refrigeration unit (TRU), the method comprising: monitoring, by a controller, electrical power consumption of the TRU; monitoring, by the controller, electrical power generated by a generator that is connected to a battery and the TRU, wherein the generator is configured to generate electrical power based on, at least in part, a dedicated engine of the TRU, and wherein the electrical power is distributed either to the TRU, or the battery, or simultaneously to the TRU and the battery; and transmitting a control signal to a battery management system (BMS) to supply of electrical power from the generator to the battery and/or powering the TRU based on the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the electrical power generated by the generator.

    19. The method of claim 18, wherein when the electrical power generated by the generator is more than the electrical power consumption of the TRU, the method comprises the steps of transmitting the control signals to the BMS associated with the battery to supply the electrical power from the generator to the battery, and wherein the electrical power supplied by the generator is determined based on the electrical power generated by the generator, the electrical power consumption of the TRU, and a state of charge (SoC) of the battery.

    20. The method of claim 18, wherein when the electrical power generated by the generator is less than the electrical power consumption of the TRU, the method comprises the steps of transmitting the control signals to the BMS associated with the battery to enable the supply of the electrical power stored in the battery to the TRU.

These units may be battery-powered or generator-powered to generate the power needed for refrigeration. An important aspect of these systems is ensuring a consistent and reliable power source, not only for the refrigeration process but also for the auxiliary systems that support the unit's operation, including the battery system that powers electronic controls, safety systems, and other essential components.

    [0035] Existing generator-powered reefer units operate in a relatively straightforward manner, with the generator powering the refrigeration unit or powering the battery. The generator may be an axle generator; however, a diesel engine may also power the generator that, in turn, provides the electricity needed to run the refrigeration mechanism. However, this setup has been identified as inefficient in terms of energy use. Specifically, it has been observed that when the generator powers the refrigeration unit, there is often surplus energy produced. This surplus arises because the generator's load does not always match its maximum output capacity, leading to inefficient energy utilization. This inefficiency presents an opportunity for innovation in how this excess energy available at the generator is managed and used.

    [0036] Furthermore, existing systems face limitations in their operational flexibility, particularly concerning the recharging of the unit's battery. The existing setup allows for the battery to be charged by the generator, but not concurrently with the operation of the refrigeration unit. This limitation necessitates a choice between running the refrigeration unit or charging the battery, but not both simultaneously, which can lead to operational inefficiencies and challenges in managing the unit's power resources, especially during long hauls where both refrigeration and battery support are important.

    [0037] Existing solutions attempting to address these inefficiencies have primarily focused on enhancing the refrigeration unit's performance. However, these solutions have not fully addressed the issue of surplus energy generation and its potential uses, particularly regarding battery recharging. Moreover, the inability to simultaneously run the refrigeration unit and recharge the battery represents a significant gap in the optimization of TRUs' operational capabilities.

    [0038] The subject disclosure overcomes the above-mentioned shortcomings and limitations associated with the existing reefer units/TRUs and associated power supply management, by providing an improved, cost-effective, and efficient solution that optimizes the electrical power use in generator-powered reefer units/TRU, ensuring that the energy generated by the generator is effectively utilized for battery recharging without compromising the operation of the refrigeration unit.

    [0039] The TRU of the subject disclosure may be installed on a container or trailer associated with a vehicle. The TRU may be configured to maintain a conditioned environment in an enclosed (storage or conservation) space within the container/trailer. Various products including, but not limited to, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, and perishable items such as foods and beverages, and the like, may be stored and transported in the container/trailer.

    [0042] Referring to FIGS. 1A and 1B, a power supply system 100 (also referred to as a system 100, herein) for the TRU 102 is disclosed. The system 100 or TRU 102 may include an electrical generator 106, and a battery 108 configured with a battery management system (BMS) 110. In one or more embodiments, the system 100 may include an existing battery 108 and the BMS 110 associated with the vehicle or TRU 102. However, in other embodiments, the battery 108 and BMS 110 may also be additionally installed on the TRU 102 or vehicle associated with the TRU 102. The generator 106 may be electrically connected to the battery 108 and the TRU 102. Further, the BMS 110 may be configured to supply electrical energy/power generated by the generator 106 to the battery 108 and/or power the TRU 102 using the electrical energy/power stored in the battery 108. In some embodiments, the generator 106 may be configured to generate electrical power, partially or entirely, based on a dedicated engine of the TRU 102. Further, the electrical power generated by the generator 106 may be distributed either to the TRU 102, or the battery 108, or simultaneously to the TRU 102 and the battery 108.

    [0043] In one or more embodiments, the generator 106 may be an axle generator that may be connected to an axle or hub of the vehicle or container associated with the TRU 102. The axle generator 106 may be configured to generate electrical power upon rotation of the vehicle wheels or movement of the vehicle or container. Further, in one or more embodiments, the generator 106 may be connected to a dedicated engine 112 of the TRU 102. In some embodiments, the dedicated engine may be a combustion engine. In one or more embodiments, the controller 114 may be in the form of a device 200 (as shown in FIG. 2) that may be retrofitted to existing TRUs 102. Referring to FIGS. 1A and 2, the device 200 may further include a first set of sensors 116-1 to monitor the electrical power consumed by the components 104 or the TRU 102 in real-time. In one or more embodiments, the first and second set of sensors may include a current sensor, a voltage sensor, a watt meter, an energy meter, and a frequency and phase meter, but are not limited to the like.

The battery 108 pack may include one or more battery cell modules (also referred to as battery cells 108, herein), and the PCU 120 to convert electrical power received and/or supplied by the battery 108 in a range suitable for the battery cells 108, the TRU 102, and the grid (external power sources) 118. Furthermore, the DC-DC converter may be configured to adjust the DC power level output by the battery cells 108 to match the input DC level for the DC power-based components 104 of the TRU 102 during the power supply mode. In addition, in one or more embodiments, the PCU 120 may include a bi-directional AC-DC converter (operating as the rectifier 120-1 as well as the inverter 120-2) configured to facilitate electrical power exchange between the battery cells 108 and the grid 118 (external power source). The PCU 120 may accordingly facilitate maximizing energy utilization and protection of the battery cells 108 from over-voltage or under-voltage conditions.

    [0056] Referring to FIG. 3, a method 300 for power supply management in a transport refrigeration unit is disclosed. Method 300 may involve the battery 108, the BMS 110, the generator 106, the controller 114/device 200, and other components associated with the system or the TRU 102 of FIGS. 1A and 1B. Method 300 may include step 302 of monitoring the electrical power consumption of the TRU, followed by step 304 of monitoring the electrical power generated by the generator associated with the TRU. The device or sensors may facilitate in monitoring the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the electrical power generated by the generator at steps 302, and 304. Accordingly, method 300 may include step 306 of enabling the supply of electrical power from the generator to the battery and/or powering the TRU based on the electrical power consumption of the TRU and the electrical power generated by the generator.
