DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

[0016] As referenced in the figures, the same reference numerals may be used herein to refer to the same parameters and components or their similar modifications and alternatives. For purposes of description herein, the terms upper, lower, right, left, rear, front, vertical, horizontal, and derivatives thereof shall relate to the present disclosure as oriented in the Figures. However, it is to be understood that the present disclosure may assume various alternative orientations and step sequences, except where expressly specified to the contrary. It is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings, and described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise. The drawings referenced herein are schematic and associated views thereof are not necessarily drawn to scale.

[0017] As show in FIGS. 1-8, an embodiment of a beaded step flashing piece 2 is shown. The beaded step flashing piece 2 includes a bottom surface 4 with an inner surface 18 and an outer surface 14. The beaded step flashing piece 2 also has a side surface 6 with an inner surface 20 and an outer surface 16. A bend 8 is at the top intersection of the bottom surface 4 and the side surface 6. In the illustrated embodiment, the bead 8 is approximately 90 degrees resulting in the bottom surface 4 being generally perpendicular to the side surface 6. However, the bend 8 could create a different angle between the bottom surface 4 and the side surface 6.

[0018] The bottom surface 4 includes a raised bead 24 on the inner surface 18 with a corresponding groove 20 on the outer surface 14. Similarly, the side surface 6 has a raised bead 22 on the inner surface 20 with a corresponding groove 12 on the outer surface 16. The grooves 10, 12 have a radius of between 0.01 and 0.04 inches. In the illustrated embodiment, both grooves have a radius of 0.02 inches. While both grooves 10, 12 are illustrated as having the same radius, they can have different radii. In addition, the grooves 10, 12 and corresponding raised beads 22, 24 are illustrated as being positioned approximately halfway down the width of the bottom surface 4 and side surface 6 and do not need to be spaced the same distance from the bend 8. In the illustrated embodiment, the grooves 10, 12 and corresponding raised beads 22, 24 are spaced approximately 2 inches from the bend 8 with the bottom surface 4 and side surface 6 both being approximately 4 inches wide. The bottom surface 4 and side surface 6 do not necessarily need to have the same width.

[0019] As illustrated in FIG. 8, the beaded step flashing 2 can be installed on a roof 102 adjacent to a wall 100. The outer surface 16 is adjacent to the wall 100 while the outer surface 14 of the bottom surface 4 is adjacent to the roof 102. Each piece of beaded step flashing 2 may be positioned over a part of a shingle 104 that is carrying a lower piece of beaded step flashing 2. The raised bead 22 on the side surface 6 can help direct water W away from bend 8 toward a lower piece of step flashing. Similarly, the raised bead 24 on the bottom surface 4 can help direct water W away from bend 8 toward a lower shingle 104 and/or lower beaded step flashing 2. The presence of the raised beads 22, 24 helps limit the amount of water that would travel to and/or along bend 8 as water that may be headed toward the bend 8 would hit the raised bead 22, 24 and be directed down the roof 102 rather than toward the bend 8 which is along the intersection of the wall 100 and roof 102. This lessens the amount to water W that is present at the intersection point, thereby lessening the chance of water penetrating into the wall 100 or into the roof 102.

[0020] In the illustrated embodiment, the beaded step flashing 2 is formed out of a 0.011 inch aluminum material. The beaded strep flashing 2 is formed from a blank that is approximately 8 inches. The beaded step flashing 2 can be made from other metal materials and from different sized blanks. Moreover, beaded step flashing 2 could be made from a non-metal material. Similarly, beaded step flashing 2 may also be coated and/or painted.
