FITTED SHEET FOLDING AID

Abstract

The fitted sheet folding aid provides a simple, compact, easy to use tool which helps a person to neatly and repeatedly fold up freshly laundered fitted bedsheets of any size for placement into storage on laundry day. The unit is easily manufactured, stores compactly and has adaptability in construction to enable attachment to a variety of horizontal or vertical household surfaces.

Claims

1. A device to aid in folding fitted bedsheets, for releasable attachment to countertops, tabletops and the like, comprised of: a thickened baseplate having an upper plate, and a lower plate, with a shoulder connecting them together; and a duality of angularly opposed, removeable elongated rod elements upwardly projecting from a duality of appropriately sized sockets, said sockets are spaced apart and located upon opposing ends of said shoulder; and an enlarged ball end singularly affixed to each elongated rod element uppermost end; and a releasable clamping means for securely attaching said baseplate onto countertops, tabletops, doors and the like; and storage means integral to said shoulder, to receive and store rod elements when rod elements are detached from baseplate.

A device to aid in folding fitted bedsheets, for removeable attachment to passage doors and the like, comprised of: a tubular structural framework having a vertical axis and a horizontal axis: and a pair of tubular guide rails attached parallel to said vertical axis of structural framework; and a thickened baseplate with a pair of elongated rod elements pivotally projecting angularly from said baseplate; and a singular, enlarged ball end affixed to each individual elongated rod element uppermost end; and a movable slide in communication with said guide rails, movable slide is part of said baseplate; and a pair of movement restraining rod guides attached to said guide rails uppermost portion; and hanging means for attaching said device in its entirety, atop a passage door.

3. A device to aid in folding fitted bedsheets according to claim 1, including; a freestanding weighted support column, attachable to baseplate lower plate.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0009] In the primary version of the present invention, the main base 1 element is constructed to resemble an elongated unequal leg C-Channel and could be made of thickened sheet metal or strong plastic.

[0010] The clamping elements 2 are provided in a pair and are flexibly connected to the main base 1 vertical shoulder. The clamping plates 2 pass through slots provided in the main base 1 vertical shoulder. Clamping plates 2 are preferably made of thickened sheet metal and have one cushioned face 7 which is positioned to bear downwardly upon on the chosen household mounting surface. Clamping knobs 3 are threaded knobs which are threaded into and captured via companion threaded components that are located on the uppermost face of the main base 1. The clamping knob 3 handle portion is preferably spherical wood but can also be made of plastic. The clamping knob 3 threaded portion communicates with the clamping plates 2 and provides clamping force when turned to bear upon the clamping plates 2. A pair of angular guide tubes 4 are mounted on the inward portion of the main base 1 vertical shoulder. The pair of angular guide tubes 4 are at opposing angularity to one another and are affixed to the outermost extremity of the main base 1 vertical shoulder. The angular guide tubes 4 are open at their uppermost portion and closed off at the lowermost portion.

[0011] A pair of flexible rods 5 of a fixed length are singularly insertable into the angular guide tubes 4. The guide tubes 4 are sized to allow insertion of the flexible rods 5. The flexible rods 5, when assembled into the angular guide tubes 4 upon the main base 1 will appear similar to a common rabbit ears television antenna array. The ball ends 6 are singularly and permanently attached the free end of each rod 5. The ball ends 6 can be constructed of smooth wood, metal or plastic. The ball ends 6 serve to nest the pockets of the fitted sheet during operation of the sheet folding aid and are not merely ornamental. The flexible rods 5 including attached ball ends 6 can be nested together and stored in the space provided between the main base 1 inward vertical face and the pair of angular guide tubes 4. The guide tubes 4 are positioned a short distance from the main base 1 inside vertical face to allow for this storage of the flexible rod pair 5 when the user is finished with the sheet folding operations. A cushioned inner face 7 is attached to the underside of the main base 1 uppermost leg portion to provide anti scratch protection for the preferred mounting surface and adds additional traction to the clamping 2 function while the sheet folding aid is in use.

[0012] A secondary embodiment of the present device utilizes a tubular type framework 8 which can be removably attached to a common household interior passage door 9 through use of hanging straps 10 attached to the tubular framework 8 uppermost portion. In this secondary embodiment, the main base 1 is captured and is guided by the operator through use of a vertical pair of parallel base plate travel rails 11. Travel rails 11 are integrally attached to the door hanging tubular framework 8, and the main base 1 follows a vertical sliding movement along the travel rails 11. Detents or stops as is known in the art control main base 1 vertical travel and return extents. Flexible rods 5 are mounted to the outward face of the main base 1 and permit the rods to pivot atop the outward face of the main base 1. At the uppermost ball end 6, the flexible rods 5 are captured within rod travel guides 12 affixed onto the door hanging tubular framework 8.

[0013] In yet a further adaptation of the present invention, a set of removable legs 13 are provided, and are attachable onto the main base 1, so the sheet folding aid may serve as a free standing unit where desired. The removable legs 13 are sized to be securely affixed onto the main base 1 via the clamping elements 2, and when affixed will position the main base 1 at approximately standard countertop height. Floor contact foot portions of the legs 13 have substantial additional weight added during construction, to allow for stability in use.

Function of the Invention

[0014] In the primary embodiment of the present invention, main base 1 is dimensionally constructed and presented as an unequal leg c-channel to enable attachability to several household tabletop or countertop type surfaces. The main base 1 has three main faces: the upper face, which is a wide portion; the vertical shoulder, which is of a height to accommodate the variety of thicknesses of many household countertop or tabletop surfaces; and the bottom face, which is shorter in width to allow for clamping onto the underside of the overhang of common countertops atop cabinetry and the like. A rubberized cushion pad 7 is attached to the underside of the main base 1 upper face and prevents scratches on the mounting countertop surface as well as additional traction to prevent excessive movement during operation. A pair of clamping elements 2 hold the main base 1 onto the countertop. The operator utilizes the turning of a pair of threaded clamping knobs 3, which have threaded portions that press upon the clamping plates 2 and secure the main base 1 to the countertop. A pair of flexible rods 5 are inserted into a pair of companion angular guide tubes 4. The guide tubes 4 are affixed to and are part of the main base 1 and allow the pair of flexible rods 5 to angularly project and reside vertically relative to the countertop mounting surface. The flexible rods 5 are removeable from the angular guide tubes 4 and can be stored within the main base 1. Each flexible rod 5 has a spherical element 6 securely attached to its free end.

[0015] The fitted sheet folding aid will assist those persons who wish to have freshly laundered fitted bedsheets neatly folded to match proportions of folded flat bedsheets being part of the set. To use the folding aid, a person would place the main base 1 upon the edge portion of a countertop, table, or ironing board, although other horizontal surfaces can be used as well. A countertop or a tabletop is common within a laundry area. The main base 1 is pushed up against the edge of the countertop until it reaches the stopping point established by the internal angular guide tubes 4. The angular guide tubes 4 are positioned internally to the main base 1 and provide a sufficient channel between the edge of the countertop and the vertical face of the main base 1 for subsequent rod storage. Next, the operator will thread down the two clamping knobs 3 which will depress onto the clamping plates 2, the plates 2 contact the upper surface of the countertop, and securely hold the main base 1 onto the countertop. The operator will then insert the pair of flexible rods 5 into their respective angular guide tubes 4, and fully seat the rods 5 until stop. The operator will now have a device attached to the countertop which resembles the rabbit ear television antenna array, with the pair of flexible rods 5 now projecting angularly above the countertop, attached to the main base 1. Operator will bring the laundry basket containing the fresh laundry and place the basket directly below the sheet folding aid. The operator now places any choice of one of the corner pockets of the fitted sheet onto the first ball end 6, with the sewn inner pocket seam of the sheet facing outwardly, towards the operator. The opposing sheet pocket is placed upon the second ball end 6, also with the inner pocket seam facing outwardly towards the operator. Next, the nearest of the remaining pockets of the sheet is placed directly atop the first ball end 6, with its inner sewn pocket seam facing inwardly, comprising the first sheet pocket pair. The last remaining sheet pocket is now placed atop the second rod 5 and its ball end 6, this last sheet pocket is also placed atop this second rod 5 ball end 6 with the sewn inner pocket facing inwardly, comprising the second sheet pocket pair. Operator now gathers the pair of sheet pockets from either of the two pocket pairs and places one of the pairs directly atop the ball end 6 of the opposing pocket pair, bringing all four sheet pocket corners together, and all four pocket corners now residing atop a singular ball end 6, with all corner pockets gathered neatly together. At this time, operator may lift off and remove the fitted sheet from the ball end 6 or may choose to pull down on the loose edges of the hanging sheet to make a loose hem type arrangement to allow for ease in folding the sheet lengthwise into one-third portions before removal from the rod 5 and ball end 6. The final folds are done atop the countertop or tabletop, to match the companion flat sheet folded proportions as desired. Flexible rod 5 pair is removed from the angular guide tubes 4 and stowed to the main base 1. The flexible rods 5 remain there until next use is desired. Main base 1 with stowed flexible rods 5 can now be removed to storage by unclamping from the countertop or may be left in place upon the countertop or other surface, at the operator's discretion.
