Abstract
A ladder-mountable material lift for mounting on an extension ladder, having a hoist for engaging with an upper rung of the extension ladder and a platform moveable by the hoist between a lower end of the extension ladder and the hoist. The platform has upper and lower side brackets on each side of the platform, the lower side brackets for sliding along upper surfaces of the side rails of the ladder base section and the upper side brackets for sliding along upper surfaces of the side rails of the ladder fly section, such that operation of the hoist causes the platform to move upwardly or downwardly along the extension ladder.
Claims
1. A ladder-mountable material lift, the material lift selectively mountable on an extension ladder, the extension ladder comprising a base section and a fly section, the base section and the fly section each comprising side rails and rungs therebetween, the sections overlapping at an overlapping portion, with one of the sections overlying an other of the sections at the overlapping portion, the material lift comprising: a hoist configured for selective engagement with an upper rung of the extension ladder, the hoist comprising an extendable and retractable connection member; and a material-supporting platform selectively connectable to the connection member for movement between a lower end of the extension ladder and the hoist; the platform comprising laterally opposed first and second sides, each of the first and second sides comprising vertically spaced-apart upper and lower side brackets, the upper and lower side brackets extending in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the extension ladder: the upper side brackets of the first and second sides configured for slidable engagement along upper surfaces of the side rails of the one of the sections; the lower side brackets of the first and second sides configured for slidable engagement along upper surfaces of the side rails of the other of the sections; and the upper and lower side brackets of each of the first and second sides configured for simultaneous slidable engagement with the upper surfaces of the side rails of the sections when moving along the overlapping portion; such that operation of the hoist causes the platform to move upwardly or downwardly along the extension ladder.
2. The material lift of claim 1 wherein the hoist comprises at least one securing pin for insertion through a hole in the side rail of the fly section when the hoist is engaged with the upper rung.
3. The material lift of claim 1 wherein the hoist further comprises backpack-type straps configured for wearing by a user allowing the user to ascend the extension ladder while carrying the hoist to the upper rung.
4. The material lift of claim 1 wherein the hoist is powered by a motor.
5. The material lift of claim 4 wherein the motor is controllable by a remote control unit.
6. The material lift of claim 1 wherein the connection member is a steel cable.
7. The material lift of claim 1 wherein the platform comprises a base and a support, the base for receiving material for transport and the support for adjusting an angle of the base.
8. The material lift of claim 7 wherein the base comprises a floor and a peripheral wall.
9. The material lift of claim 1 wherein the upper and lower side brackets comprise a polymer for slidable engagement with the side rails.
10. A ladder-mounted material lift system for transporting material between vertically spaced apart locations, the system comprising: an extension ladder comprising a base section and a fly section, the base section and the fly section each comprising side rails and rungs therebetween, the sections overlapping at an overlapping portion, with one of the sections overlying an other of the sections at the overlapping portion; a hoist selectively engaged with an upper rung of the extension ladder, the hoist comprising an extendable and retractable connection member; and a material-supporting platform selectively connected to the connection member for movement between a lower end of the extension ladder and the hoist; the platform comprising laterally opposed first and second sides, each of the first and second sides comprising vertically spaced-apart upper and lower side brackets, the upper and lower side brackets extending in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the extension ladder: the upper side brackets of the first and second sides slidably engaged with upper surfaces of the side rails of the one of the sections for travel therealong; the lower side brackets of the first and second sides slidably engaged with upper surfaces of the side rails of the other of the sections for travel therealong; and the upper and lower side brackets of each of the first and second sides simultaneously slidably engaged with the upper surfaces of the side rails of the sections when moving along the overlapping portion; such that operation of the hoist causes the platform to move upwardly or downwardly along the extension ladder.
11. A material lift for an extension ladder comprising first and second sections, the first and second sections each comprising side rails, with one of the sections overlying an other of the sections at an overlapping portion, the material lift comprising: a hoist engageable with an upper rung of the extension ladder, the hoist comprising an extendable and retractable connection member; and a material-supporting platform connectable to the connection member for movement between a lower end of the extension ladder and the hoist; the platform comprising opposed lateral sides, each of the lateral sides comprising upper and lower engagement surfaces extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the extension ladder: the upper engagement surfaces configured for slidable engagement along upper surfaces of the side rails of the one of the sections and the lower engagement surfaces configured for slidable engagement along upper surfaces of the side rails of the other of the sections; and the upper and lower engagement surfaces configured for simultaneous slidable engagement with the upper surfaces of the side rails of the sections when moving along the overlapping portion.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENTS
(13) Throughout the following description, specific details are set forth in order to provide a more thorough understanding to persons skilled in the art. However, well known elements may not have been shown or described in detail to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the disclosure. The following description of examples of the invention is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise form of any exemplary embodiment. Accordingly, the description and drawings are to be regarded in an illustrative, rather than a restrictive, sense.
(14) The present invention is directed to a device and system for transporting material on a platform that is pulled along an extension ladder surface by a hoist, to either lift the material to an elevated work area like a roof or to lower the material to a lower end of the ladder near the ground.

(17) The motor 34 is preferably powered by a power cord 50 (though other power means such as batteries may be used with certain embodiments) and controlled by a remote control unit 36, which in the illustrated embodiment is connected by a cord to the motor but could also be of wireless configuration as would be within the knowledge of the skilled person.
(18) The frame 40 also supports backpack-type straps 38. Such straps 38 can be positioned over the shoulders of a user, enabling the user to carry the hoist 26 (disconnected from the platform 52) up the ladder 12 for mounting at a top of the ladder 12, such that the user can ascend the ladder 12 while maintaining three-point contact for safety purposes.
