Abstract
A thermoforming trim tool which comprises a punch side and a die side. The punch side moves to the die side in order to trim molded articles from a heated thermoforming sheet that is disposed therebetween. While the punch side of the tool comprises a plurality of punches, the die side of the tool comprises a plurality of dies, and both the punches and the dies are engaged with upper mount plates. Each of the upper mount plates is engaged with a lower mount plate via one or more location keys. Each of the location keys is configured to provide that the upper mount plates are shifted a pre-determined distance relative to the lower mount plate, thereby providing trim centers which are adjusted to account for pre-determined shrinkage in the sheet.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the punch side further comprises a plurality of upper mount plates secured to the lower mount plate, each of the plurality of upper mount plates including holes configured to receive the at least one pin of the respective location key, wherein each of the plurality of punches are secured to a respective upper mount plate.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the die side further comprises: a shoe, a lower mount plate engaged with the shoe, the lower mount plate having a plurality of location keys engaged with the lower mount plate, at least one pin on each location key capable of being positioned at a plurality of locations on a respective location key, a plurality of upper mount plates secured to the lower mount plate, each of the plurality of upper mount plates includes holes configured to receive a pin on the respective location key, wherein dies are secured to the plurality of upper mount plates.
4. The method of claim 2, wherein providing the trim tool further includes: providing the at least one pin on a specific location on the respective location key; securing the lower mount plate to the shoe; inserting each location key in a pocket of the lower mount plate; securing each of the plurality of upper mount plates to the lower mount plate; and securing the plurality of punches the plurality of upper mount plates.
5. The method of claim 4, wherein securing each of the plurality of upper mount plates to the lower mount plate includes coupling pins on respective location keys to each of the plurality of upper mount plates.
6. The method of claim 4, wherein the lower mount plate comprises a plurality of holes, each hole configured to receive a fastener to secure the lower mount plate to the shoe.
7. The method of claim 4, wherein each of the plurality of upper mount plates comprises a slot configured to receive a fastener to secure each of the plurality of upper mount plates to the lower mount plate.
8. The method of claim 7, wherein each fastener extends through a respective location key.
9. The method of claim 2, wherein each of the plurality of punches comprises a base plate and a punch element, and securing the plurality of punches to the plurality of upper mount plates includes securing the base plate to a respective upper mount plate and securing a respective punch element to the base plate.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheet comprises a plurality of rows of molded articles.
11. The method of claim 10, further comprising, after trimming the plurality of articles from the sheet, advancing the sheet through the trim tool, and trimming one or more additional articles from the sheet.
12. The method of claim 11, wherein the method further comprises repeating the steps of advancing the sheet through the trim tool and trimming one or more additional articles from the sheet.
13. The method of claim 1, wherein trimming the plurality of articles from the sheet includes bringing the punch side to the die side while the sheet of molded articles is positioned between the punch side and the die side.
14. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the position of selected ones of the plurality of punches defines a uniform offset with respect to a trim center of each article corresponding to the selected ones of the plurality of punches.
15. The method of claim 14, further comprising determining an amount of shrinkage in the sheet prior to trimming.
16. The method of claim 15, further comprising adjusting the position of selected ones of the plurality of punches based on the determined amount of shrinkage.
17. The method of claim 16, wherein the amount of shrinkage is determined based on data or measurements taken from previous operation of the trim tool.
18. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheet is a thermoformed sheet formed of at least one of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET), polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene (PE), or polypropylene (PP).
19. A plurality of articles obtained by the method of claim 1.
20. The plurality of articles of claim 19, wherein the plurality of articles have a uniform offset with respect to trim centers.

DESCRIPTION
[0027] While this invention may be susceptible to embodiment in different forms, there is shown in the drawings and will be described herein in detail, a specific embodiment with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered an exemplification of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to that as illustrated.
[0028]
[0029] Each of the upper mount plates 32, 34 is positioned relative to the lower mount plate 28, 30 via one or more location keys 36. The location keys 36 are configured to provide that the upper mount plates 32, 34 are shifted a pre-determined distance relative to the lower mount plate 28, 30, thereby providing trim centers which are adjusted in order to account for shrinkage in the sheet 22, preferably shrinkage that has been predicted based on existing data and/or measurements taken previously.
[0030]
[0031]
[0032]
[0033]
[0034] As mentioned above, the pin 52 on the location key 36 gets received by a corresponding hole in an upper mount plate 32, 34.
[0035] While the upper mount plate 28 shown in
[0036] The punch side 12 of the tool 10 will be described first.
[0037]
[0038]
[0039] The embodiment of the invention described hereinabove provides that the position of the upper mount plates 32, 34 (and therefore the punches 14 and the dies 18) relative to the lower mount plates 28, 30 can be precisely adjusted by placing the pins 52 on the location keys 36 at precise locations on the location key 36. This allows for a desired offset in the trim centers when the molded articles 20 are trimmed from the sheet 22.
[0040] In terms of a method, a method in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention comprises providing pins 52 on specific locations on location keys 36, securing lower mount plates 28, 30 to shoes 24, 26 of a thermoforming trim tool 10, inserting the location keys 36 in pockets 42 in the lower mount plates 28, 30, securing upper mount plates 32, 34 to the lower mount plates 28, 30, and ultimately securing punches 14 and dies 18 to the upper mount plates 32, 34. Therefore, the thermoforming trim tool 10 is useable to trim molded articles 20 from a sheet 22 and, while doing so, provide a desired offset with regard to trim centers.
[0041] While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is envisioned that those skilled in the art may devise various modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
