[0022] Referring to the figures, an example household appliance is illustrated in FIG. 1, e.g., the household appliance may, in various embodiments, be a laundry appliance such as a washing machine appliance or a dryer appliance as illustrated in FIG. 1. In various embodiments of the present subject matter, a laundry appliance may be any suitable laundry appliance, such as a washing machine appliance, a dryer appliance, a combination washer-dryer appliance, etc. Dryer appliance 11 is separately labelled in FIG. 1 to distinguish dryer appliance 11 from washing machine appliance 10, where both washing machine appliance 10 and dryer appliance 11 are example embodiments of a household appliance 10 which may be usable with one or more example household appliance packaging assemblies described herein.

[0023] According to various embodiments of the present disclosure, household appliance 10 may be any of the example appliances described herein or may be any other household appliance, such as a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) appliance. Thus, it will be understood that the present subject matter is not limited to any particular household appliance.

[0024] It should be understood that household appliance and/or appliance are used herein to describe appliances typically used or intended for common domestic tasks, such as a laundry appliance, e.g., as illustrated in FIG. 1, or a HVAC appliance, a dishwashing appliance, a refrigerator, a water heater, etc., and any other household appliance which performs similar functions.

[0025] As generally seen throughout FIG. 1, in at least some embodiments, each laundry appliance 10 and 11 includes a cabinet 12 which defines a vertical direction V, a lateral direction L, and a transverse direction T that are mutually perpendicular. Each cabinet 12 extends between a top side 16 and a bottom side 14 along the vertical direction V. Each cabinet 12 also extends between a first (left) side 18 and a second (right) side 20, e.g., along lateral direction L, and between a front side 22 and a rear side (not shown) along transverse direction T.

[0026] Referring to FIGS. 2 through 7, an example packaging assembly 100 for a household appliance, such as the example washing machine appliance 10 and/or dryer appliance 11 of FIG. 1, is provided. Specifically, FIG. 2 depicts a perspective view of packaging assembly 100 for a household appliance. FIG. 3 depicts a perspective view of packaging assembly 100, particularly illustrating additional features of packaging assembly 100. FIG. 4 depicts an elevation view of a lifting side of packaging assembly 100. FIG. 5 depicts an elevation view of a non-lifting side of packaging assembly 100. FIGS. 6 and 7 depict edge views of a lifting flap of packaging assembly 100 and a paper-based board of a paper-based skid base of packaging assembly 100 respectively. Although packaging assembly 100 is described herein as containing washing machine appliance 10, it should be appreciated that packaging assembly 100 may contain any other suitable household appliance, e.g., a dryer appliance, a HVAC appliance, a dishwashing appliance, a refrigerator, a water heater, and the like. Although an exemplary construction of packaging assembly 100 is described herein, it should be appreciated that variations and modifications may be made to packaging assembly 100 while remaining within the scope of the present subject matter.

[0027] According to example embodiments, packaging assembly 100 may include a packaging container 102. Packaging container 102 may extend from a bottom side 104 to a top side 106 in vertical direction V and from a first (left) side 108 to second (right) side 110 in a lateral direction L. Moreover, packaging container 102 may extend from a front side 112 to a rear side 114 in a transverse direction. Additionally, as best illustrated in FIG. 2, in some embodiments, packaging container 102 may define a cube or a rectangular prism shape. However, it should be appreciated that packaging container 102 may define any other suitable packaging container shape.

[0028] According to example embodiments, packaging container 102 may define a container interior 116 and a container exterior 118. For instance, packaging container 102 may include one or more packaging walls 120, such as top wall 122, a floor 124, and/or a plurality of side walls 126. Floor 124 may be positioned below and spaced apart from top wall 122 in vertical direction V. The plurality of side walls 126 may be positioned apart from each other in a lateral direction L and/or transverse direction T. Moreover, creases or corners 128 may be defined between adjacent pairs of side walls 126 of plurality of side walls 126. The plurality of side walls 126 may also extend from floor 124 to top wall 122 and connect floor 124 and top wall 122 in vertical direction V. As such, top wall 122, floor 124, and plurality of side walls 126 may collectively define container interior 116 therein that may be complementary to a predetermined household appliance, such as washing machine appliance 10, of packaging assembly 100. As best illustrated in FIG. 2, a household appliance of packaging assembly 100, such as washing machine appliance 10, may be positioned within container interior 116 on floor 124. In this respect, the household appliance is at least partially enclosed by packaging wall(s) 120. Furthermore, top wall 122, floor 124, and plurality of side walls 126 may collectively define container exterior 118.

[0029] According to example embodiments, packaging container 102 may include a lifting flap 130 (FIG. 3) for providing one manner of lifting packaging assembly 100 using, for example, a warehouse vehicle. In some embodiments, lifting flap 130 may be one of a plurality of closing flaps 132 that collectively make up one of packaging walls 120, such as top wall 122, that are each attached to packaging container 102 at separate hinges 134 about which closing flaps 132 may rotate/fold to facilitate access to container interior 116. For example, lifting flap 130 may be one of closing flaps 132 of top wall 122 and may fold about one of hinges 134 so that flap moves downward in vertical direction V. As best illustrated in FIG. 3, lifting flap 130 may be folded about one of hinges 134 so that lifting flap 130 is positioned over a portion of container exterior 118. For example, lifting flap 130 may be folded so that lifting flap 130 is positioned along one of side walls 126. In this respect, lifting flap 130 and the portion of container exterior 118 over which lifting flap 130 is positioned collectively define a lifting pocket 136 that is positioned between lifting flap 130 and the portion of container exterior 118 over which lifting flap 130 is positioned. A lifting hook (not shown) or other lifting apparatus or mechanism, such as a lifting hook of a warehouse vehicle, may be inserted within lifting pocket 136 for lifting packaging assembly 100. For example, in some embodiments, lifting pocket 136 may be accessed underneath lifting flap 130 in vertical direction V, for lifting packaging assembly 100 in vertical direction V.

[0030] According to example embodiments, while folded, lifting flap 130 may be rigidly attached to container exterior 118 to constrain movement of lifting flap 130 about hinge 134. In this respect, lifting flap 130 provides support for the lifting mechanism to lift packaging assembly 100 with little to no movement of lifting flap 130 about hinge 134. For example, in some embodiments, adhesive tape 138 may extend over lifting flap 130 and a portion of container exterior 118 while lifting flap 130 is folded over the portion of container exterior 118 to rigidly attach lifting flap 130 to container exterior 118 to constrain movement/folding of lifting flap 130 about hinge 134. For example, as illustrated in FIG. 5, adhesive tape 138 may extend over lifting flap 130 while folded and side wall 126 on second (right) side 110 of packaging container 102 to rigidly attach lifting flap 130 to container exterior 118 to constrain movement/folding of lifting flap 130 about hinge 134. It should be appreciated that adhesive tape 138 may extend over lifting flap 130 and any suitable portion of container exterior 118. For example, in some embodiments, adhesive tape 138 may extend over lifting flap 130 and side wall 126 on first (left) side 108 of packaging container 102.

[0031] According to example embodiments, packaging container 102 may be configured as a paper-based packaging container. For example, some or all the components of packaging container 102, such as packaging walls 120 and/or lifting flap 130 may include or be formed entirely of paper material such as cardboard or paper composite including shredded paper material that is formed into a predetermined shape. The shredded paper material may include any suitable paper material that has been shredded (e.g., torn or cut into strips or fine particles). For example, the shredded paper material may be wastepaper or recycled paper material, such as newspaper, that has been shredded to a desired size or shape. Specifically, as illustrated in FIG. 6, in some embodiments, lifting flap 130 may include a first paper-based flap panel 131 and a second paper-based flap panel 133 spaced apart from first paper-based flap panel 131. In addition, lifting flap 130 may include a medium, such as a corrugated flap liner 135, attached to and between first paper-based flap panel 131 and second paper-based flap panel 133. Corrugated flap liner 135 may define a fluted pattern (e.g., a corrugated, a wavy, or a serpentine pattern). Particularly, the fluted pattern of corrugated flap liner 135 may give lifting flap 130 rigidity, strength, stiffness, and help prevent or mitigate collapsing of lifting flap 130 while packaging assembly 100 is being lifted by the lifting hook or other lifting mechanism. Additionally, in some embodiments, corrugated flap liner 135 may be adhered to adjacent panels, such as first paper-based flap panel 131 and/or second paper-based flap panel 133, for instance, with a corn starch-based adhesive.

[0032] Additionally, or alternatively, in some embodiments, packaging assembly 100 may include a paper-based skid base 140 attached or adhered to bottom side 104 of packaging container 102 for cushioning or supporting the household appliance, such as washing machine appliance 10, when the household appliance is positioned within packaging container 102. As such, paper-based skid base 140 may include a plurality of paper-based boards 142, such as a first paper-based board 142A, a second paper-based board 142B, and a third paper-based board 142C, that each extend across bottom side 104 of packaging container 102. For example, as best illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, first, second, and third paper-based boards 142A, 142B, 142C may extend along bottom side 104 of packaging container 102 in transverse direction T between front side 112 of packaging container 102 and rear side 114 of packaging container 102.

[0033] Additionally, paper-based boards 142 may be spaced apart from each other. In this respect, a lifting fork aperture 144 may be defined between each adjacent pair of paper-based boards 144 for receiving lifting fork extensions therethrough, such as from a warehouse vehicle, for lifting packaging assembly 100. For example, first, second, and third paper-based boards 142A, 142B, 142C may be spaced apart from each other in lateral direction L. In this respect, a first lifting fork aperture 144A may be defined between first and second paper-based boards 142A, 142B and a second lifting fork aperture 144B may be defined between second and third paper-based boards 142B, 142C.

[0034] According to example embodiments, some or all the components of paper-based skid base 140, such as paper-based boards 142 may include or be formed entirely of paper material such as cardboard or paper composite. Specifically, as illustrated in FIG. 7, in some embodiments, each paper-based board 142 may include a first paper-based board panel 141 and a second paper-based board panel 143 spaced apart from first paper-based board panel 141. In addition, each paper-based board 142 may include a medium, such as a corrugated board liner 145, attached to and between first paper-based board panel 141 and second paper-based board panel 143. Corrugated board liner 145 may define a fluted pattern (e.g., a corrugated, a wavy, or a serpentine pattern). Particularly, the fluted pattern of corrugated board liner 145 may give each paper-based board 142 rigidity, strength, stiffness, and cushion to provide support for the household appliance within packaging container 102 while also providing cushion to prevent or inhibit damage to the household appliance. Additionally, in some embodiments, corrugated board liner 145 may be adhered to adjacent panels, such as first paper-based board panel 141 and/or second paper-based board panel 143, for instance, with a corn starch-based adhesive.

[0035] In some embodiments, each lifting fork aperture 144 may be accessible from only one side of packaging container 102. For example, as best illustrated in FIGS. 3 through 5, packaging container 102 may define one or more extension or skirt flaps 146 extending from packaging container 102 and below packaging container 102 in vertical direction V. Skirt flaps 146 may cover paper-based skid base 140 on all but one side, such as front side 112, of packaging container 102, to constrain lifting of packaging assembly 100 by lifting fork extensions to one side. In this respect, skirt flaps 146 may block access to lifting fork aperture(s) 144 on all but one side of packaging container 102. For example, one of skirt flaps 146 may cover paper-based skid base 140 on second (right) side 110 of packaging container 102 to block access to lifting fork aperture(s) 144 on second (right) side 110 of packaging container 102. However, none of skirt flaps 146 may cover paper-based skid base 140 on front side 112 of packaging container 102 and, thus, facilitate access to lifting fork aperture(s) 144 from front side 112 of packaging container 102.

[0036] Additionally, in some embodiments, lifting flap 130 and lifting fork aperture(s) 144 may both be on the same side of the packaging assembly 102. For example, the lifting flap 130 and the lifting fork aperture(s) 144 may be positioned on and accessible from only one side, known as the universal handling side, of packaging container 102 to permit lifting of packaging assembly 100 only from the universal handling side. For example, as best illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, lifting flap 130 and first and second lifting fork apertures 144A, 144B may be positioned on and accessible from only front side 112 of packaging container 102. In this respect, lifting of packaging assembly 100 from any side other than the universal handling side (e.g., front side 112) is inhibited or prevented.

[0037] According to example embodiments, packaging assembly 100 may include one or more paper-based frame posts 150 positioned within container interior 118 of packaging container 102 for providing structure and support to packaging container 102 while the household appliance is positioned within packaging container 102. As best illustrated in FIG. 3, paper-based frame post(s) 150 may be positioned at one or more of corners 128 defined between adjacent pairs of side walls 126 of plurality of side walls 126 of packaging container 102. For example, in some embodiments, paper-based frame post(s) 150 may be positioned at corners 128 at the universal handling side (e.g., front side 112) of packaging container 102 to provide support when lifting packaging assembly 100. Additionally, paper-based frame post(s) 150 may extend in vertical direction V between bottom side 104 and top side 106 of packaging container 102. Paper-based frame post(s) 150 may include or be formed entirely of paper material such as cardboard or paper composite.

[0038] Embodiments of the present subject matter advantageously provide a household appliance packaging assembly including a paper-based packaging container and a paper-based skid for safely supporting and facilitating lifting of the packaging assembly and/or a paper-based lifting flap for safely facilitating lifting of the packaging assembly. Providing various ways in which the packaging assembly may be lifted allows different tools of warehouse vehicles to be used to lift the packaging assembly. As such, expensive warehouse vehicles or tools of the warehouse vehicles don't need to be purchased to lift the packaging assembly.

[0039] This written description uses examples to disclose the invention, including the best mode, and also to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, including making and using any devices or assemblies and performing any incorporated methods. The patentable scope of the invention is defined by the claims, and may include other examples that occur to those skilled in the art.
