The components described hereinafter as making up various elements of the disclosed technology are intended to be illustrative and not restrictive. Many suitable components that would perform the same or similar functions as components described herein are intended to be embraced within the scope of the disclosed devices and methods. Such other components not described herein may include, but are not limited to, for example, components developed after development of the disclosed technology.

[0034] It is also to be understood that the mention of one or more method steps does not preclude the presence of additional method steps or intervening method steps between those steps expressly identified.

[0035] Reference will now be made in detail to exemplary embodiments of the disclosed technology, examples of which are illustrated in FIGS. 1-10, and disclosed herein. Wherever convenient, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.

[0036] FIGS. 1-10 depict a picnic table 100, according to some examples. In some examples, the picnic table 101 comprises a table top 101 supported by two leg assemblies 106, and two benches 103 provided on opposite sides of the table top 101. The two benches 103 may also be supported by the two leg assemblies 106. In some examples, the table top 101 comprises an umbrella hole 130.

[0037] The table top 101 may comprise multiple table top segments, thereby allowing the length of the table top 101 to be reduced for transportation and ease of assembly. Similarly, the benches 103 may comprise multiple bench segments, thereby allowing the length of each bench 103 to be reduced for transportation. By providing a segmented table top and segments benches, the picnic table 100 may be provided in a packed configuration, allowing the components of the picnic table to be packaged or temporarily secured together during transportation/shipping at a reduced length relative to the overall length of the picnic table when assembled. Temporarily securing the components together may be accomplished by ties, fasteners, and/or placing the components in together in a box or container. In some examples, the table top segments are attached to one another by at least one hinge. In some examples, the bench segments are attached to one another by at least one hinge. In some examples, table top 101 and benches 103 are segmented lengthwise.

[0038] In some examples, the overall length of the picnic table is approximately 96 inches or 8 feet when assembled. In the packed configuration, the picnic tables overall length may be less than 96 inches and the components of the picnic table may be placed in a box or shipping container having a length of less than 96 inches. Thereby, shipping/transportation costs may be reduced by shipping the picnic table in a disassembled or packed configuration.

[0039] In some examples, each of the two leg assemblies 106 comprises two substantially J-shaped members 107. In some examples, the picnic table further comprises two diagonal braces 112, wherein each diagonal brace 112 extends from a bracket 116 of one of the leg assemblies 106 to the center of the table top 101 to support the middle portion of the table top. In some examples, at least one end of each diagonal brace 112 comprises a brace plate 142 which abuts a support beam provided at the center of the table top 101. The leg assemblies 106 may be collectively referred to as a leg assembly. In some examples, a single leg assembly is provided proximate to the center of the picnic table.

[0040] In some examples, the table top segments 102a, 102b and the bench segments 104a, 104b comprise a perforated metal or metal mesh. In some examples, the metal mesh comprises a diamond shape. In some examples, the table top segments 102a, 102b and the bench segments 104a, 104b comprise a thermoplastic coating. In some examples, a frame surrounds the mesh for each table top segment and each bench segment. In some examples, each of the end support beams/edge frames 153 of the first table top segment 102a and the second table top segment 102b comprise a semi-circular cutout such that a circular umbrella hole 130 is formed when the picnic table is assembled.

[0041] With reference to FIGS. 1-8, a picnic table 100 is depicted having two table top segments 102a, 102b of equal lengths, according to some examples. In some examples, a first table top segment 102a and a second table top segment 102b each have a length L.sub.t1, L.sub.t2 approximately equal to half the length (L.sub.tt) of the entire table top 101. In some examples, when assembled, the length (L.sub.tt) of the table top 101 is equal to the overall length (L.sub.bt) of the picnic table 100. Therefore, in some examples, the lengths L.sub.t1, L.sub.t2 of each table top segment 102a, 102b are approximately equal half the overall length of the picnic table 100, when assembled.

[0042] Similarly, in some examples, each bench 103 of the picnic table 100 comprises two bench segments 104a, 104b of equal lengths L.sub.b1, L.sub.b2. In some examples, the lengths L.sub.b1, L.sub.b2 of each bench segment is approximately equal to half the overall length of the picnic table 100, when assembled. Additionally, in some examples, the length L.sub.b1, L.sub.b2 of each bench segment 104a, 104b is equal to the length L.sub.t1, L.sub.t2 of each table top segment 102a, 102b, and when assembled, the length each bench 103 is equal to the length of the table top 101.

[0043] In some examples, the length of the picnic table 100 in the assembled configuration is approximately 96 inches, and the length L.sub.t1, L.sub.t2 of each table top segment 102a, 102b and the length L.sub.b1, L.sub.b2 each bench segment is equal to approximately 48 inches.

[0044] In some examples, the tabletop 101 has a loading capacity of at least 2000 pounds (lbs). In some examples, benches 103 have a loading capacity of at least 800 pounds. Reinforcement components such as support bars 114, may allow for the table top 101 and the benches 103 maintain a high load capacity while being segmented. In some examples, where the picnic table 100 comprises two bench segments 104a, 104b forming each bench 103, the picnic table further comprises two bench support rods 114. Each bench support rod 114 may extend between the first bench segment 104a and the second bench segment 104b of each bench 103 to provide additional support where the first bench segment 104a abuts the second bench segment 104b at the center of each bench 103. In some examples, each end of each bench support rod 114 comprises a rod plate 144 abutting a support frame 154 of the two adjacent bench segments 104 and secured in place by a fastener 124. In some examples, an end support frame 155 of each bench segment 103a, 103b comprises a cutout to accommodate the support rod 114. In some examples, the cutout provided in the end support frame 155 of each bench segment 103a, 103b comprises a radius equal to the radius of the support rod 114. In some examples, an end support frame 155 spans a width of each of the bench segments 104a, 104b, and the end support frames 155 of two adjacent bench segments 104a, 104b abut one another to form each bench 103. In some examples, end support frames 155 of two adjacent bench segments 104a, 104b further comprise through holes 134 which may receive additional fasteners to secure the bench segments together. Additional support frames/beams, e.g., support beam 152 depicted in FIGS. 2 and 5) may be provided, for example across a width of the table top 101 to prevent bowing.

[0045] In some examples, where the picnic table 100 comprises two table top segments 102a, 102b having equal lengths, the ends of each table top segment 102a, 102b may comprise an end support beam 153. In some examples, each end support beam 153 spans a width of each of the table top segments 102a, 102b, and the end support beam 153 of adjacent table top segments 102a, 102b abut one another to form the table top 101. One of the diagonal braces 112 may extend from a bracket 116 of one of the leg assemblies 106 to the end support beam 153 of the first table top segment 102a, and the other diagonal brace 112 may extend from a bracket 116 of the other leg assembly 106 to the end support beam 153 of the second table top segment 102b. An aperture 126 may be provided in the bracket 116 to accommodate one or more fasteners (not shown) to attached the diagonal brace 112 to the bracket 116. In some examples, each diagonal brace 112 comprises a brace plate 142 which abuts a corresponding end support beam 153 of a table top segment and is secured in place by a fastener 122 which passes through both the end support beam 153 of the first table top segment 102a and the end support beam 153 of the second table top segment 102b.

[0046] In some examples, wherein the first bench segment 104a and the second bench segments 104b have equal lengths, and the first table top segment 102a and the second table top segment 102b have equal lengths, the picnic table may comprise four bench segments and two table top segments total. Each of the bench segments may comprise the same dimensions and structure, thereby being interchangeable with one another. Similar, each of the tabletops may comprise the same dimensions and structure, thereby being interchangeable with one another.

[0047] With references to FIGS. 9 and 10, in some examples, the picnic table 100 comprises a table top 101 having a first table top segment 102a and two second table top segments or table top end segment. The second table top segments may be provided as end segments 102b.

[0048] In some examples, in an assembled configuration, the first table top segment 102a extends between the two leg assembles 106 and has a length L.sub.t1. The two table top end segments 102b may extend outwardly from the leg assemblies 106 and have a length L.sub.t2 less than the length L.sub.t1 of the first table top segment 102a. The first table top segment 102a may comprise two end support beams which abut the end support beams of the two table top end segments 102b when assembled to form the table top 101 having a length L.sub.tt equal to the added lengths of the first table top segment 102a and the two table top end segments 102b.

[0049] Similarly, the picnic table 100 comprises two benches 103, each bench having a first bench segment 104a and two second bench segments. The second table top segments may be provided as end segments 104b.

[0050] In some examples, in an assembled configuration, the first bench segment 104a extends between the two leg assembles 106 and has a length L.sub.b1. The two bench end segments 104b may extend outwardly from the leg assemblies 106 and have a length L.sub.b2 less than the length L.sub.b1 of the first bench segment 104b. The first bench segment 104a may comprise two end support beams which abut the end support beams of the two table top end segments 104b when assembled to form a bench having a length equal to the added lengths of the first bench segment 102a and the two bench end segments 102b.

[0051] In some examples, a length L.sub.t1 of the first table top segment 102a is two to six times greater than a length L.sub.t2 of each of the table top end segments 102b. In an example, the first table top segment 102a may be approximately six feet in length and the two table end segments 102b may be approximately one foot in length. In some examples, a length L.sub.b1 of each first bench segment 104a is equal to the length L.sub.t1 of the first table top segment 102a, and a length L.sub.b2 of each bench end segment 104b is equal to the length L.sub.t2 of each table top end segment 102a.

[0052] Because the first bench segment 104a abuts the bench end segments 104b at the leg assemblies, it may not be necessary to provide additional support bars (e.g., support bars 114) at the center of the benches 103 as discussed herein (e.g., support beams 114). Support plates of the leg assemblies 106 (e.g., support plate 162 depicted in FIG. 2) may be expanded or reinforced to provide additional support where the bench segments abut one another. Similarly, support plates for the table top 101 may also be expanded or reinforced to provide additional support where the table top segments abut one another.

[0053] While the examples herein disclose 1) embodiments of a picnic table 100 having two table top segments of equal lengths and four bench segments of equal length, and 2) embodiments of a picnic table having a first table top segments and bench segments differing in length, it should be appreciated that the invention should not be limited to the implementations. For example, the first bench segment 104b (as depicted in FIGS. 9 and 10) may be additionally divided into two segments and a support beam may be provided there between.

[0054] FIGS. 11-12 depict a picnic table 200 comprising multiple planks 205 forming the table top 201 and benches 203, according to some embodiments. In some examples, planks 205 are provided lengthwise across the picnic table 200. Planks 205 may comprise wood, plastic, metal, or a composite material.

[0055] In some examples, as depicted in FIG. 11, in some examples, each plank 205 is approximately equal to half the overall length of the picnic table 200, when assembled. In some examples, first table top segment 202a and second table top segment 202b of the table top 201 are formed by a plurality of planks 205, each plank 205 having a length approximately equal to half the overall length of the picnic table 200. In some examples, first bench segment 204a and second bench segment 204b are each formed by a single plank 205 a length approximately equal to half the overall length of the picnic table 200, thereby each bench 203 comprises two planks 205. In some examples, first bench segment 204a and second table top segment 204b of the bench 203 are formed by a plurality of planks 205, each plank 205 having a length approximately equal to half the overall length of the picnic table 200. In some examples, each plank 205 of the plurality of planks comprises the same length, width, and thickness. For example, a picnic table 200 may comprise ten planks 205 each having the same length, width, and thickness. In some examples, the planks used to form the table top 201 may have different dimensions than the planks used to form the benches 203.

[0056] In some examples, as depicted in FIG. 12, in an assembled configuration, picnic table 200 comprises a first table top segment 202a extending between two leg assembles 206 and comprising a plurality of first planks 205a. Picnic table 200 may further comprise two table top end segments 202b comprising a plurality of second planks 205b extending outwardly from the leg assemblies 106 and have a length less than the lengths of the first planks 205a.

[0057] The picnic table 200 may comprise two benches 203, each bench having a first bench segment 204a and two second bench segments 204b. The second bench segments may be provided as end segments 204b. In some examples, in an assembled configuration, picnic table 200 comprises first bench segments 204a extending between the two leg assembles 206. The first bench segments may comprise at least one first plank 205a. Each bench 203 may comprise two bench end segments 202b comprising at least one second plank 205b extending outwardly from the leg assemblies 206 and have a length less than the lengths of the first planks 205a.

[0058] In some examples, each first plank 205a of the plurality of first planks comprises the same length, width, and thickness, and each second plank 205b of the plurality of second planks comprises the same length, width, and thickness. For example, a picnic table 200 may comprise five first planks 205a each having the same length, width, and thickness and ten second planks 205a each having the same length, width, and thickness. In some examples, the planks used to form the table top 201 may have different dimensions than the planks used to form the benches 203.

[0059] In some examples, with reference to FIGS. 13 and 14, a bench 300 is depicted in an assembled configuration having a backrest 301 and a seat 303. The bench 300 may be supported by two or more leg assemblies 316. The leg assemblies 316 may support both the backrest 301 and the seat 303. In some examples, backrest 301 comprises two or more segments 302a, 302b. Each of the segments 302a, 302b may include a plurality of planks. The planks of each segment 302a, 302b of the backrest 301 may be identical (e.g., having identical lengths, widths, and depths). In some examples, seat 303 comprises two or more segments 304a, 304b. Each of the segments 304a, 304b may include a plurality of planks. The planks of each segment 304a, 304b of the seat 303 may be identical (e.g., having identical lengths, widths, and depths). The planks forming the bench 300 may be fastened to and supported by the leg assemblies 316.

[0060] In some examples, segmentation of the backrest 301 and seat 303 of the bench 300 allows for the bench to be disassembled to provide a shorter length for packaging and transportations, which may reduce shipping costs, as compared to if the backrest 301 and seat 303 (and the planks which form each backrest 301 and seat 303) were provided as the full length of the bench 300.

[0061] With reference to FIG. 13, a bench 300 may comprise two segments of equal length. In such an example, the backrest 301 may comprise a first segment 302a and a second segment 302b having planks of equal lengths, and the seat 303 may comprise a first segment 304a and a second segment 304b having planks of equal lengths. In some examples, the bench 300 comprises three leg assemblies 316, and the segments abut one another at a leg assembly positioned at the center of the bench 300.

[0062] With reference to FIG. 14, the backrest 301 of the bench 300 may comprise a first segment 302a, configured as a middle segment, extending between two outer leg assemblies. Two second segments 302b may be configured as end segments extending outward from the two outer leg assemblies. The seat 303 of the bench 300 may comprise a first segment 304a, configured as a middle segment, extending between two outer leg assemblies. Two second segments 304b of the seat 303 may be configured as end segments extending outward from the two outer leg assemblies.

[0063] It should be appreciated that bench 300 could be segmented in various ways, such as three or four equal segments or unequal segments. Further, the number of planks which form the backrest 301 and seat 303 could vary. For example, each segment could comprise a single plank.

[0064] FIGS. 15 and 16 depict a bench 300, which only comprises a seat 303 with no backrest provided, according to some examples. With reference to FIG. 15, a bench 300 may comprise two segments of equal length. In such an example, the seat 303 may comprise a first segment 304a and a second segment 304b having planks of equal lengths. In some examples, the bench 300 comprises three leg assemblies 316, and the segments abut one another at a leg assembly positioned at the center of the bench 300. With reference to FIG. 16, the seat 303 of the bench 300 may comprise a first segment 304a, configured as a middle segment, extending between two outer leg assemblies. Two second segments 304b of the seat 303 may be configured as end segments extending outward from the two outer leg assemblies.

[0065] FIG. 17 depicts an exemplary method of joining planks of the picnic tables 200 or benches 300, described herein. In some examples, an end of a first plank 401a and an end of a second plank 401b each comprise a substantially l-shaped cut 412 wherein the first plank 401a and the second plank 401b abut one another. One of more through holes 410 may be provided for a fastener to fasten the ends of the planks 401a, 401b to a leg assembly 416. In some examples, a fastener secures the ends of both planks to the leg assembly 416. In examples where the tables/benches comprise two equal segments, the first planks 401a and the second planks 401b may be identical, each having an l-shaped cut 412 on one end. In examples where the tables/benches comprise a middle segment and two end segments, planks of the middle segment include 1-shaped cuts at both ends, and end segments include an l-shaped cut only at one end. The l-shaped cut 412 provided where the planks meet may also facilitate draining of water. In such an example, the bottom of the cut is provided off the end of the leg assembly.
