Abstract
A riding vehicle is provided with a downdraft fan assembly mounted on a vehicle roll bar for providing a flow of ambient air over the vehicle operator and a canopy carried by the fan assembly and providing solar and precipitation protection for the operator.
Claims
1. A canopy assembly for a riding vehicle, comprising: a canopy; an opening in the canopy circumscribed by an interior peripheral flange; and a downdraft fan; wherein at least one of the downdraft fan or canopy is mounted to a riding vehicle and the canopy and downdraft fan are configured to secure together, such that the downdraft fan is accommodated proximate the opening in the canopy; wherein the flange is positioned such that the flange overlies a perimeter of the downdraft fan such that air flow to a blade portion of the downdraft fan is not limited by the flange.
2. The canopy assembly of claim 1, wherein the canopy assembly extends substantially above one or more seats of the riding vehicle, such that the canopy assembly provides one or more operators or passengers of the riding vehicle at least some protection from at least one of sunlight or rain.
3. The canopy assembly of claim 1, further comprising a roof cap adapted and sized to be attached to the canopy in a position substantially covering the canopy opening, wherein the roof cap is vertically offset from the canopy forming at least one side intake port such that lateral air flow to the downdraft fan is substantially unimpeded; and wherein the canopy, canopy opening, and roof cap are arranged such that inlet air for the downdraft fan is drawn substantially from above the canopy, through the side intake port and the canopy opening, and is directed over the one or more operators or passengers of the riding vehicle.
4. The canopy assembly of claim 1, wherein the canopy is generally rectangular.
5. The canopy assembly of claim 1, wherein the canopy is constructed of fiberglass.
6. The canopy assembly of claim 1, further comprising a frame which supports the canopy assembly.
7. The canopy assembly of claim 1, wherein the canopy assembly is secured to the riding vehicle by connecting a rear end of the canopy assembly to at least one of a roll bar or roll cage of the riding vehicle.
8. The canopy assembly of claim 7, wherein the canopy assembly extends substantially forwardly and horizontally from the roll bar or roll cage.
9. The canopy assembly of claim 1, wherein the downdraft fan is mounted to the riding vehicle by connecting a rear end of the downdraft fan to at least one of a roll bar or roll cage of the riding vehicle.
10. The canopy assembly of claim 9, wherein the downdraft fan and canopy assembly extend substantially forwardly and horizontally from the roll bar or roll cage.
11. The canopy assembly of claim 1, further comprising an apertured grill panel engaged with the canopy opening.
12. The canopy assembly of claim 11, wherein the apertured grill panel is constructed of at least one of metal wire mesh, metal grill material, or a synthetic grill material such as plastic or fiberglass.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
(12) Referring to the drawings,
(13) Referring additionally to
(14) Referring to
(15) The roof cap 52 includes a rectangular top section 70 having longitudinally spaced downwardly inclined depending legs 72 terminating with outwardly turned flanges 74. In assembly, the top section 70 of the roof cap is slightly larger than the central opening 58 in the shell 50 to provide precipitation and solar protection thereover. The top section 70 is spaced vertically above the roof section 54 to provide side intake ports of sufficient size for the flow capacity of the fan. The flanges 74 of the roof cap 52 are attached to shell by suitable fasteners 76.
(16) For assembly, referring to
(17) It will thus be appreciated that the canopy assembly may be connected with existing fan assemblies for retrofit applications, or furnished as an accessory package on new or existing equipment. The mounting of the assembly accomodates a wide range of commercial vehicles without further or extensive modification. Moreover, if desired, the roof cap may be optional and the lateral orientation of the vents changed to a longitudinal flow through passage.
(18) Having thus described a presently preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will now be appreciated that the objects of the invention have been fully achieved, and it will be understood by those skilled in the art that many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. The disclosures and description herein are intended to be illustrative and are not in any sense limiting of the invention, which is defined solely in accordance with the following claim.
