Abstract
An electronic job management system for an image reproduction system includes a plurality of processing units for forming print products. The management system is arranged to: store a set of capabilities and capability constraints for each processing unit; receive a job specification for a print job; derive required processing operations and attributes from the job specification; and check whether the required processing operations and attributes match the capabilities and constraints of at least one selection of processing units from the processing units available in the image reproduction system. The management system is further arranged to: store quality ratings for each of a plurality of different combinations of processing units, processing operations and attributes, each quality rating having a value selected from among at least three different values; and if the check for matching processing operations and attributes was successful for at least one selection of processing units, and if at least one quality rating is available for that selection in combination with the processing operations and attributes, determine, on the basis of the stored quality ratings, an expected quality value 30 for the resulting print products.
Claims
1. An electronic job management system for an image reproduction system comprising a plurality of processing units for forming print products, the management system being arranged to: store a set of capabilities and capability constraints for each processing unit; receive a job specification for a print job; derive required processing operations and attributes from the job specification; and check whether the required processing operations and attributes match the capabilities and constraints of at least one selection of processing units from the processing units available in the image reproduction system, wherein the management system is further arranged to: store quality ratings for each of a plurality of different combinations of processing units, processing operations and attributes, each quality rating having a value selected from among at least three different values; and if the check for matching processing operations and attributes was successful for at least one selection of processing units, and if at least one quality rating is available for that selection in combination with the processing operations and attributes, determine, on the basis of the stored quality ratings, an expected quality value for the resulting print products, and wherein the plurality of processing units comprises at least one printer and at least one finisher.
2. The management system according to claim 1, wherein the stored quality ratings and the expected quality value comprise quality values selected from a finite set of quality values each of which is associated with a specific numerical value.
3. The management system according to claim 2, being arranged to determine the expected quality value by selecting a minimum from among a plurality of quality values that have been determined for a plurality of attributes, if the processing operation is characterized by more than one attribute.
4. The management system according to claim 2, being arranged to determine the expected quality value by inter-/extrapolation from a plurality of stored quality ratings for attribute values that are different from the attribute value specified in the job specification.
5. The job management system according to claim 2, being arranged to determine a selection of processing units for which the expected quality value is highest among all possible selections of processing units for which the capabilities and constraints match the job specification.
6. The job management system according to claim 1, arranged to prompt a user to enter quality ratings for jobs that have been processed.
7. The job management system according to claim 1, arranged to display the expected quality value via a user interface.
8. A method of job management in an image reproduction system comprising a plurality of processing units for forming print products, the method comprising the steps of: storing a set of capabilities and capability constraints for each processing unit; receiving a job specification for a print job; deriving required processing operations and attributes from the job specification; and checking whether the required processing operations and attributes match the capabilities and constraints of at least one selection of processing units from the processing units available in the image reproduction system, wherein the method comprises the further steps of: storing quality ratings for each of a plurality of different combinations of processing units, processing operations and attributes, each quality rating having a value selected from among at least three different values; and if the check for matching processing operations and attributes was successful for at least one selection of processing units, and if at least one quality rating is available for that selection in combination with the processing operations and attributes, determining, on the basis of the stored quality ratings, an expected quality value for the resulting print products, and wherein the plurality of processing units comprises at least one printer and at least one finisher.
9. A non-transitory software product comprising program code on a machine readable medium, the program code, when run on a processing unit of a job management system for an image reproduction system, causes the processing unit to perform the method according to claim 8.

[0032] As is well known in the art, the user interface 10 may comprise several types of input and output ports such as network links, a keyboard, a touch screen, an LCD display and the like and permits a user to enter job specifications 18 and data for print jobs to be processed, as well as commands for controlling the processing operations to be performed.
[0033] The electronic job management system 12 has a central processing unit (CPU) 20 communicating with the user interface 10 for receiving the job data, the job specifications 18 and the commands, and which also communicates with the processing units 14 in order to control their operations. The CPU 20 further communicates with a memory 22 storing capabilities and constraints of each of the processing units 14. For example, in case of a printer, capabilities stored in the memory 22 may relate to the capability of forming color prints, the colors of available inks or toners, and the like. Another example of a capability would be the capability to form duplex prints or the capability to process sheets in both, A3 and A4 formats. An example of a constraint could be that A3 sheets can be processed only in a certain orientation. The latter example, relating to the sheet format and sheet orientation, may also apply to a finisher, and then the constraints concerning the orientation of the sheets may be compatible or conflicting.

[0035] When a print job is submitted via the user interface 10, the CPU 20 parses the job specification 18 in order to identify the capabilities that are required for performing the job. The CPU further checks whether, among the processing units 14 that are available in the system, there exists a selection of processing units (a printer or a combination of a printer and a finisher) which has the required capabilities. If no such selection exists, the user is advised via the user interface that the job must be rejected.
[0036] Otherwise, the CPU 20 reads the constraints of the selected processing units and checks whether the attributes contained in the job specification 18 match the constraints. For example, an attribute in the job specification 18 may specify that the printed copies consist each of 100 sheets of 80 g paper and shall be stapled. Then, there may be a mismatch with the constraint limiting the thickness of the stack of sheets.
[0037] If the CPU 20 has found at least one selection of processing units which has the required capabilities and for which all attributes match the related constraints, the CPU will instruct the selected processing units to perform the print job. If no such selection is found, the job is rejected. However, even if the attributes in the job specification match all constraints, so that the job does not have to be rejected, the attributes may be such that they approach certain physical limits of the processing units involved, so that the print products obtained may be only of a relatively poor quality.
