The present disclosure provides a method of operating a separator (1,1a, 1b) for separating particles from a particle-laden airflow. The method comprises receiving, in the controller (18), a separation unit status signal from the separation unit status sensor (16a, 16b, 16c, 16d), deriving, in the controller (18), separator status data based on the separation unit status signal, communicating, via the communication device (19), the separator status data to the external unit (1a, 1b, 26), receiving, via the communication device (19), incoming control data from the external unit (1a, 1b, 26), determining, in the controller (18), based on the separator status data and based on the incoming control data, whether to initiate separating unit maintenance, and selectively initiating separating unit maintenance based on said determination. The disclosure also provides a separator for implementing the method and a system comprising two or more such separators.

A centrifugal separator for clarification of a liquid mixture into a heavy phase and a light phase, having a centrifugal separator bowl rotatable around an axis and encasing a separation space, and a sludge space radially outward of said separation space. The centrifugal separator bowl includes a hermetic inlet for feeding a liquid mixture to said separation space; a first hermetic outlet for a separated clarified light phase; and a second hermetic outlet for a separated heavy phase; a plurality of outlet conduits extending from an outer position in said sludge space to said second hermetic outlet. Each of the outlet conduits has a flow restriction in the form of a nozzle or vortex diode. A method to control such a centrifugal separator, in order to provide a stable flow through said outlet conduits, is also disclosed.

A separation system for separating a liquid mixture includes a centrifugal separator. The centrifugal separator includes a stationary frame, a rotatable assembly and a drive unit for rotating the rotatable assembly relative the frame around an axis of rotation. The separator further includes a feed inlet for receiving a liquid mixture to be separated, a first liquid outlet for discharge of a separated liquid light phase and a second liquid outlet for discharge of a liquid heavy phase having a density that is higher than said liquid light phase. The rotatable assembly.sup., includes a rotor casing enclosing a separation space in which a stack of separation discs is arranged to rotate around a vertical axis of rotation. The separation space is arranged for receiving liquid mixture from said feed inlet. The separation system further includes a container arranged downstream of said first and/or second liquid outlet for receiving discharged liquid phase, and a scale for measuring the weight of discharged liquid phase contained in said container.

A method of operating a centrifugal separator is provided. The method includes supplying a liquid mixture to be separated to the inlet of the centrifugal separator, separating the liquid mixture into at least one separated liquid component and a separated sludge component, discharging at least one separated liquid component from at least one liquid outlet of the centrifuge rotor, removing gas from a space surrounding a centrifuge rotor of the separator, to obtain a sub-atmospheric pressure in the space, and discharging a separated sludge component from at least one sludge outlet arranged at a periphery of the centrifuge rotor to the space which is delimited by a frame, wherein the discharging is performed when the sub-atmospheric pressure in the space surrounding the centrifuge rotor is within a preset pressure interval ΔP.
