The pressing element (5) is fastened to the two bearings, and the two bearings are arranged in such a manner that finishing tape is pressed against a circumferential surface (2) by the pressing element (5) across a contact angle (4) using a pressing force. The pressing device (1) is adjustable in order to process work piece sections (3) of different diameters. The pressing element may be a toothed belt (5) having tooth-like ribs (8), and the toothed belt (5) is interlockingly mounted in the support element (6) using the tooth-like ribs (8).

An apparatus can comprise a body and a first portion. The first portion can be coupled to the body and moveable therewith. The first portion can comprise a rigidifying material and a layer. The rigidifying material can be positioned in a chamber defined by an envelope formed of a gas-impermeable material. A pressure within the chamber can be variable between at least a lower pressure state and a higher pressure state. In the higher pressure state the material is relatively flexible, and in the lower pressure state the material can be relatively less flexible than in the higher pressure state. The layer can be manipulatable by the rigidifying material. More particularly, the layer can have a first state when the pressure within the chamber is in the higher pressure state. In the first state, the layer can be formable by the target surface to take on a desired shape that can be substantially a match of the target surface. The layer can have a second state when the pressure within the chamber is in the lower pressure state. In the second state, the layer can maintain the desired shape and can be substantially less formable than in the first state.

A superfinishing method for a bearing roller involves installation of a pair of parallel feed drums. The feed drums have guide thread surfaces each continuing in a spiral shape on an outer periphery, and each being driven to rotate about respective center axes. The feed drums through-feed a workpiece to be formed into a bearing roller while supporting and rotating the workpiece with the guide thread surfaces opposed to each other. The superfinishing method includes using a grinder to process an outer peripheral surface of the workpiece passing between the feed drums, varying a thread bottom angle of the guide thread surface based on positions along the feed drums in an axial direction, and superfinishing straight and logarithmic portions at both ends of the straight portion of a rolling surface of the bearing roller by one through-feed of the workpiece passing between the feed drums.

Various examples are provided for polishing techniques for flexible tubular workpieces. In one example, a method includes supporting a tubular workpiece on a rod that extends axially through it; positioning a turning wheel against an external surface of the tubular workpiece, where it is held by magnetic attraction; and rotating the tubular workpiece by rotating the turning wheel. The external surface of the tubular workpiece is polished by the abrasive particles during rotation of the tubular workpiece. In another example, a polishing system includes a workpiece holder including a rod configured to axially support a tubular workpiece; a turning wheel with abrasive particles distributed about an outer surface; a wheel support assembly configured to position the outer surface of the turning wheel against the an external surface of the tubular workpiece, where it is held by magnetic attraction. The external surface is polished during rotation of the tubular workpiece.

A device for finishing a workpiece includes two pressing elements and a holding apparatus for holding the pressing elements. A finishing band is pressable against a workpiece surface to be finished. A flexurally resilient intermediate element is disposed so as to transmit a pressing force to the finishing band by means of a force-receiving surface and by means of a force-transmitting surface. The intermediate element or a plurality of them is configured to transmit pressing forces, which are offset relative to one another in a circumferential direction of the workpiece surface, to the finishing band. The force-transmitting surfaces of the intermediate element or the plurality of them are oriented in a substantially V-shaped manner relative to one another, and are substantially planar in an undeformed initial state and have a curvature in a same direction as the workpiece surface when there is a pressing force.
