SHAPED VITRIFIED ABRASIVE AGGLOMERATE, ABRASIVE ARTICLES, AND METHOD OF ABRADING
An abrasive agglomerate particle includes fused aluminum oxide mineral bonded in a vitreous matrix. The fused aluminum oxide mineral is present in a range from 70 percent by weight to 95 percent by weight and the vitreous matrix is present at least at five percent by weight, based on the weight of the abrasive agglomerate particle. The fused aluminum oxide mineral has an average particle size of up to 300 micrometers, and the abrasive agglomerate particle has a frusto-pyramidal shape with side walls having a taper angle in a range from 2 to 15 degrees and a dimension of at least 400 micrometers. The abrasive agglomerate particles are useful in abrasive articles. The method includes contacting the workpiece with an abrasive article and moving the workpiece and the abrasive article relative to each other to abrade the workpiece.
POLISHING ROLL
The present invention provides a polishing roll capable of, for example, realizing three-dimensional polishing of hard materials such as sapphire glass at a high removal amount. The polishing roll is a cylindrical polishing roll capable of rotating about a central axis, characterized in that the polishing roll includes a core part serving as a central axis to which torque is applied, an intermediate part having a cross-section concentric with the core part, and a polishing part disposed on the outer peripheral surface of the intermediate part, and the intermediate part is made of a cushion material that is softer than the polishing part.
Nonwoven abrasive articles and methods of making the same
Nonwoven abrasive articles comprise a nonwoven abrasive member having an overlayer composition comprising a fatty acid metal salt disposed thereon adjacent to a working surface. The nonwoven abrasive member comprises abrasive particles adhered to a fiber web by a binder. The abrasive particles may be exposed and/or the nonwoven abrasive member may have suitable frictional properties. Methods of making the same are also disclosed.
STRUCTURED ABRASIVE ARTICLES AND METHODS OF MAKING THE SAME
A structured abrasive article comprises a plurality of shaped abrasive composites disposed on and secured to a major surface of a backing. The shaped abrasive composites comprise magnetizable abrasive particles retained in an organic binder. On a respective basis, each of the magnetizable abrasive particles has a ceramic body with a magnetizable layer disposed on at least a portion thereof. Methods of making and using the structured abrasive articles are also disclosed.
METHOD OF MAKING MAGNETIZABLE ABRASIVE PARTICLES
A method of making magnetizable abrasive particles includes providing a slurry layer disposed on a substrate. The slurry layer has an exposed surface and comprises magnetic particles, a binder precursor, and a liquid vehicle. Abrasive particles are electrostatically contacted with the slurry layer such that they are aligned substantially oriented perpendicular to the surface of the substrate, and are partially embedded within the slurry layer. The liquid vehicle is at least partially removed from the slurry layer and the binder precursor is converted into a binder to provide a magnetizable layer comprising the magnetic particles partially embedded in the binder. The magnetizable abrasive particles are separated from the releasable substrate. Each magnetizable abrasive particle respectively comprises a portion of the magnetizable layer disposed on a portion of an abrasive particle.
Advanced polishing pads having compositional gradients by use of an additive manufacturing process
Embodiments herein relate to advanced polishing pads with tunable chemical, material and structural properties, and manufacturing methods related thereto. According to one or more embodiments herein, a polishing pad with improved properties may be produced by an additive manufacturing process, such as a three-dimensional (3D) printing process. Embodiments herein thus may provide an advanced polishing pad having discrete features and geometries, formed from at least two different materials that include functional polymers, functional oligomers, reactive diluents, addition polymer precursor compounds, catalysts, and curing agents. For example, the advanced polishing pad may be formed from a plurality of polymeric layers, by the automated sequential deposition of at least one polymer precursor composition followed by at least one curing step, wherein each layer may represent at least one polymer composition, and/or regions of different compositions. Embodiments herein further provide a polishing pad with polymeric layers that may be interpenetrating polymer networks.
