METHOD FOR REPAIRING SELF-SEALING TIRES

This invention discloses a technique for replenishing the level of sealant in self-sealing tires at the time that a puncture in the tire is being repaired or when the tire is being recapped. This technique provides the tire with its original level of self-sealing capabilities and will enhance the possibility of the tire remaining in service until it can be conveniently repaired. This method involves (1) injecting a liquid sealant formulation into the sealant layer of a self-sealing tire through at least one puncture hole therein, and (2) sealing the hole or holes in the supporting carcass and the innerliner of the tire. The sealant utilized is typically liquid polyisobutylene having a weight average molecular weight of 25,000 to 200,000. The sealant formulation used can optionally also contain a colorant or a pigment.

SELF SEALING TIRE

This invention reveals a method of manufacturing a puncture sealing pneumatic rubber tire which comprises: (1) building an unvulcanized tire including a circumferential rubber tread, a supporting carcass therefor, two spaced beads, two rubber sidewalls connecting said beads, an inner liner and a solid sealant formulation layer disposed inwardly from said supporting carcass and outwardly from said inner liner, wherein said solid sealant formulation layer is comprised of (a) polyisobutylene, (b) a peroxide, and (c) a reinforcing filler, wherein the polyisobutylene is present in the sealant layer at a level of at least 50 weight percent; and (2) shaping and vulcanizing said tire in a tire mold under conditions of heat and pressure and simultaneously forming in situ a puncture sealant layer in said tire by both crosslinking and partially depolymerizing said polyisobutylene rubber in said sealant layer formulation.

External patch for puncture or slice on sidewall or tread section of a tire

A method and/or article is used for repairing of a worn, damaged, punctured or sliced but otherwise functional vehicle tire, for example on the sidewall of the tire. An external patch includes a layer of adhesive applied directly to the slice or puncture and a patch portion that is applied to an exterior surface of a vehicle tire. A separate adhesive affixes the patch portion to the exterior surface of the tire. The adhesive is in contact with a contact surface of the patch portion and also with the exterior surface of the tire. The adhesive may not form a continuous layer, but may hold the patch to the tire by discrete anchor points of adhesive, the anchor points being separated by adhesiveless areas.

Noise damper bonded to tire using adhesives

The invention relates to a tire comprising a circumferential tread having an outer tread surface and an inner innerliner surface; at least two spaced-apart beads; sidewall portions extending between the tread and the beads; and a belt-like foam noise damper having first and second terminal ends, wherein the noise damper lines the innerliner surface; wherein the noise damper is secured to the innerliner surface via an adhesive situated between the noise damper and the innerliner, wherein the terminal ends of the noise damper are cut at an angle of less than 90 degrees, overlap each other, and the overlapped second terminal end of the foam is joined to the first terminal end by the adhesive present underneath the second terminal end, and wherein the adhesive has weight in the range of 30 to 800 grams per square meter of foam surface.

METHOD FOR PRODUCING A REINFORCEMENT STRUCTURE FOR A TIRE

The reinforcing structure for a tire is in the form of a stratified assembly formed of two layers of reinforcing strips of completely connected cross section, and flattened in shape. According to the method, the strips of each layer are laid side by side in a main direction of laying. The strips of the first layer are spaced apart by a distance that is less than the width of the strips of the second layer and in such a way that the edges of the strips of the first layer overlap the edges of the strips of the second layer. The two layers of strips are separated by a layer of uncoupling rubber.
