IODINE AND POLYOL COMPOSITION, METHOD, AND USE
20230000905 · 2023-01-05 ·

A composition having molecular iodine in combination with a polyol can be used for control and treatment of microbes and infections on biological and non-biological surfaces. Compositions have a combination of molecular iodine (I2) and an acceptable source of iodate (IO3), and a buffering acid (inorganic or organic), in combination with a polyol in an amount of 3-50% by weight. The present compositions can also have prebiotic and probiotic properties on biological surfaces and membranes for the control and treatment of infection as well as the support of growth of commensal microbes and the control of pathogenic microbes.

Aqueous Hop Extracts and Their Use as Antimicrobial Agents

Described herein is the preparation of an aqueous hop extract and a boiling water hop extract prepared from dried hop cones that were ground prior to extraction. As discussed below, extracts were prepared from a number of different hop varieties and were tested against a number of clinically relevant bacterial strains. As discussed herein, surprisingly, the boiling water extract showed greater antibacterial activity than the aqueous extract.

An ultrasound probe with antimicrobial surface activity includes a housing, wherein the housing has an antimicrobial compound present at an exterior surface of the probe housing in sufficient concentration to provide antimicrobial activity with microbes that contact the exterior surface of the ultrasound probe. A plurality of antimicrobial compounds may be present at the exterior surface of the probe housing in sufficient concentration to provide antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial compound may be an additive to a polymeric material from which the probe housing is manufactured. The antimicrobial compound may be present in an antimicrobial coating disposed on the exterior surface of the probe housing. The antimicrobial activity may provide log reductions in gram+ and gram− bacteria after 24 hours in the range from 3 to 7.

Antimicrobial Composition

A composition comprising a hydrogen peroxide source and at least one metal halide. The hydrogen peroxide source comprises hydrogen peroxide and a means for generating hydrogen peroxide. The means for producing hydrogen peroxide comprises at least one oxidoreductase and at least one oxidoreductase substrate. The oxidoreductase substrate comprises at least one sugar, said sugar located within the composition. The composition is held under conditions that render the components inactive until rehydrated.
