SURFACE MODIFICATION METHOD

Provided are methods for surface-modifying a thermoplastic resin which produce surfaces that show not only low adsorption of proteins and cells but also selective adsorption or adhesion of specific cells such as cancer cells, and further have excellent durability. A method for surface-modifying an object made of a thermoplastic resin, the method including: step 1 of forming polymerization initiation points on the surface of the object; and step 2 of radically polymerizing at least a hydrophilic monomer starting from the polymerization initiation points by irradiation with UV light having a wavelength of 300 to 400 nm to form a graft layer having a thickness of 2 to 100 nm on the surface of the object.

Cyclic olefin copolymers and films prepared therefrom

The present disclosure provides copolymers comprising from about 0.5 wt % to about 25 wt % cyclic olefin content and films comprising the copolymers. In one embodiment, a copolymer includes a C.sub.2-C.sub.40 monomer content of from about 75 wt % to about 99.5 wt %; and a C.sub.5-C.sub.40 cyclic olefin comonomer content of from about 0.5 wt % to about 25 wt %. The copolymer has a density of about 0.91 g/cm.sup.3 to about 0.933 g/cm.sup.3. Films of the present disclosure can have advantageous mechanical properties (such as melt strength) and optical properties (such as haze %).

ADHESION PROMOTER COMPOSITIONS FOR CYCLIC OLEFIN RESIN COMPOSITIONS

This invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the adhesion of resin compositions to substrate materials. More particularly, the invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the adhesion of ROMP compositions to substrate materials using an adhesion promoter composition, where the adhesion promoter composition comprises a pre-reacted mixture comprising at least one compound containing at least two isocyanate groups and at least one compound comprising a heteroatom-containing functional group and a metathesis active olefin, where the adhesion promoter composition is storage stable and/or possesses in-resin storage stability when added to a resin composition, particularly a cyclic olefin resin composition, such as a ROMP composition. The polymer products produced via ROMP reactions of the invention may be utilized for a wide range of materials and composite applications. The invention has utility in the fields of polymer and materials chemistry and manufacture.

Cyclic diene-based copolymers

Disclosed herein are copolymers formed by cationic polymerization of one or more cyclic dienes and a comonomer selected from the group consisting of a monoterpene, a branched styrene, and combinations thereof, in the presence of a catalyst. Random copolymers having repeat units derived from a cyclic conjugated diene, such as 1,3-cyclohexadiene, and a comonomer such as a monoterpene, can be prepared as soluble products in hydrocarbon solvents. The copolymers can be crosslinked with various crosslinking agents to form materials having good oxidative stability and fire retardancy. The uncrosslinked and crosslinked copolymers have useful properties such as a low dissipation factor, low dielectric constants, and a good balance of thermomechanical and electrical properties that make them valuable in electronic applications.
