The device includes at least two sorting augers with auger tips, a frame, a separation wall, and a pickup spiral. The sorting augers each have auger tips that are adapted to be positioned slightly above ground level. The sorting augers diverge relative to one another and are inclined upwardly and rearwardly at similar inclined angles θ to the horizontal to define a diverging gap. Behind the augers is the upwardly and rearwardly inclined separation wall. The separation wall is rearward of the pair of augers and extends substantially across the diverging gap. The frame is mountable to the vehicle and is adapted to support the pair of sorting augers and the separation wall. The device further includes at least one pickup spiral set at a shallower angle π inclination to the horizontal than the steeply inclined angle θ.

The corn header includes a frame, a plurality of row units and a plurality of row dividers for guiding crop plants toward the row units. The frame is mounted to a forward end of the combine harvester. The plurality of row units extends forward from the frame. Each row divider is connected to and extends forward of at least one row unit, and includes a conveyor connected to a lateral side of the row divider for the purpose of lifting and propelling crop plants into the corn header. In a preferred embodiment, the conveyor is an auger including a helical flight having a non-circular profile or a plurality of notches to increase its ability to lift and propel crop plants into the corn header.

A crop lifter apparatus has a bracket for attachment to a header guard finger. A cylindrical groove in a front portion of the mounting bracket has an axis perpendicular to a travel direction and a lock bolt hole is defined through the mounting bracket at the groove. The rear of a finger support member has a cylindrical wall engaged in the groove, and defines a cylindrical lock aperture with an axis coincidental with the axis of the groove. A slot in the rear of the support member is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the lock aperture. A lock cylinder is engaged in the lock aperture and a lock bolt extends through the lock bolt hole and the slot and into the lock cylinder and is tightened to secure the support member to the mounting bracket at a selected finger angle. A length of the lifting finger may be adjustable.
