A portable air filter cleaning device includes a housing configured to receive an air filter to be cleaned, at least one spray mechanism within the housing for spraying fluid onto the air filter to be cleaned within the housing, a cleaning fluid reservoir coupled to at least one spray mechanism for selectively spraying cleaning fluid onto the air filter to be cleaned within the housing, a rinsing fluid reservoir coupled to at least one spray mechanism for selectively spraying rinsing fluid onto the air filter to be cleaned within the housing; and a motor for facilitating cleaning, rinsing and drying of the air filter to be cleaned. The device may be rotational for cylindrical type air filters or designed for cleaning flat plate type air filters. An associated method of cleaning an air filter is disclosed.

The device may comprise a first cap and a second cap disposed in a spaced-apart, coplanar relationship. A U-shaped tube extends between the caps in a rotatable relationship. The U-shaped tube has apertures offset from a radial vector configured to discharge pressurized air while rotating 360 degrees. An air tube feeds pressurized air into the U-shaped tube, creating inertia that rotates the U-shaped tube while simultaneously discharging pressurized air from the apertures. The air filter is cleaned from the inside out, and in a uniform manner. An attached container may capture dislodged contaminants.

An exhaust gas purification apparatus for an internal combustion engine, capable of carrying out oxidation removal of PM deposited in a filter as a whole in an efficient manner, includes a filter arranged in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine and having an oxidation catalyst supported in at least an upstream side portion thereof, and a heating device arranged so as to be able to heat the upstream side portion of the filter irrespective of oxidation reaction heat of the oxidation catalyst, wherein when filter upstream regeneration processing to oxidize and remove deposition PM in the upstream side portion of the filter is carried out by controlling a heating device, an amount of decrease of the upstream side deposition PM by the filter upstream regeneration processing is reflected on an amount of filter PM deposition in the ordinary filter regeneration processing which oxidizes and removes the deposition PM in the entire filter by means of oxidation reaction heat of unburnt fuel generated by the oxidation catalyst supported in the filter, and the filter upstream regeneration processing is ended, even if the thus reflected amount of filter PM deposition is in a state of being larger than a reference amount of deposition which is a threshold value for ending the ordinary filter regeneration processing.
