A rotating circular disc attaches to a rotary motion abrading tool and converts the rotary motion to a random orbital motion. The disc has a center and has an axis of rotation that is off center and that forms a center of gravity. One embodiment of the disc is a backing plate. A second embodiment of the disc is a polishing pad. A third embodiment of the disc is a combination of a backing plate and a polishing pad.

COATED ABRASIVE ARTICLES AND METHODS OF MAKING COATED ABRASIVE ARTICLES

A coated abrasive article is presented. The coated abrasive article includes a backing having first and second opposed major surfaces. The coated abrasive article also includes a make layer bonded to the first major surface. The coated abrasive article also includes abrasive particles directly bonded to the make layer. The abrasive particles are at least partially embedded in the make layer. The coated abrasive article also includes a size layer directly bonded to the make layer, and abrasive particles. One of the make layer and size layer comprise a patterned coating.

Coated abrasive article with multiplexed structures of abrasive particles and method of making

The method generally involves the steps of filling the cavities in a production tool each with an individual abrasive particle. Aligning a filled production tool and a resin coated backing for transfer of the abrasive particles to the resin coated backing. Transferring the abrasive particles from the cavities onto the resin coated backing and removing the production tool from the aligned position with the resin coated backing. Thereafter the resin layer is cured, a size coat is applied and cured and the coated abrasive article is converted to sheet, disk, or belt form by suitable converting equipment.

ABRASIVE ARTICLES AND METHODS FOR FORMING SAME

An abrasive article can include a body including agglomerated first abrasive particles and unagglomerated second abrasive particles contained in a bond material. The first abrasive particles can include chromium oxide. The second abrasive particles can be elongated. The bond material can include an inorganic material including a vitreous phase.

FIXED ABRASIVE ARTICLES AND METHODS OF FORMING SAME

A fixed abrasive article having a body including abrasive particles contained within a bond material, the abrasive particles including shaped abrasive particles or elongated abrasive particles having an aspect ratio of length:width of at least 1.1:1, each of the shaped abrasive particles or elongated abrasive particles having a predetermined position or a predetermined three-axis orientation.

HYBRID CMP CONDITIONING HEAD

In various implementations, a conditioning head may include a substrate and a plurality of protrusions extending from a surface of the substrate. The plurality of protrusions be arranged on the substrate surface in a plurality of sinusoidal wave patterns. For example, the plurality of protrusions may be arranged in an array of offset sinusoidal wave patterns. In some implementations, a conditioning head may include a macro design in which one or more portions include protrusions and one or more portions do not include protrusions.

Systems and methods for making abrasive articles

In methods and systems of making an abrasive article, abrasive particles are loaded to a distribution tool including a plurality of upper walls defining a plurality of spacing slots, and a plurality of lower walls defining a plurality of distribution slots. The spacing slots are open to the distribution slots, which are open to a lower side of the tool. The loaded particles are spaced and distributed from the distribution tool to a major face of a backing web below the lower side and moving relative to the tool in a machine direction. The upper walls space the particles in the machine direction. The particles distributed by the lower walls undergo an orientation sequence in which each particle is oriented into a column aligned along the machine direction. The upper walls can be disposed oblique to the lower walls. The upper and lower walls can have pointed upper portions.
