COOLANT PUMP WITH INTEGRATED CLOSED-LOOP CONTROL
20170370274 · 2017-12-28 ·

A coolant pump for an internal combustion engine (ICE) in a vehicle with a central engine control, having a pump shaft that drives an impeller for pumping a coolant. An axial piston pump operated via a wobble plate on a rear face of the impeller, conducts part of the pumped coolant away to a hydraulic circuit that extends from the axial piston pump via a proportional valve back to the pumped coolant and has a branch-off between the axial piston pump and the proportional valve as the hydraulic actuator. A regulating slide valve adjusts coolant volume flow of depending on pressure in the hydraulic circuit. A sensor detects a parameter characteristic of the coolant volume flow and outputs an actual value signal. A dedicated pump control controls the proportional valve based on the actual value signal of the sensor and a desired value signal of the central engine control.

A device for convective cooling of a functional assembly for a motor vehicle includes a fan, which in operation, is designed to move air along a flow axis defined by the design and placement of the fan. A flapper valve device is provided having an air transit opening and a flapper valve assembly disposed therein, with at least one flapper valve provided to change the open-flow cross section of the air transit opening and being adjustable between a closed position and an open position. A control unit is provided. The fan and the flapper valve device are arranged at a distance from each other such that air moved due to operation of the fan then flows through the air transit opening at least when the flapper valve device is in the open position. The control unit is designed to detect at least one operating parameter of the fan.

Method and system for maintaining an engine coolant level

Methods and systems are provided for maintaining a desired engine coolant level and a relative glycol amount in the engine coolant by using water sourced from on-board vehicle systems. In one example, a method may include supplying water to the engine coolant reservoir in response to the engine coolant level decreasing below a threshold. Also, a relative glycol amount in the coolant may be maintained at a threshold amount by adding water to the coolant in response to a relative glycol increasing above the threshold.
