Quench protection in superconducting magnets
A method of protecting a superconducting magnet from quenches, the superconducting magnet having at least one primary coil comprising high temperature superconductor, HTS, material. A secondary HTS tape is provided, the secondary HTS tape being in proximity to and electrically insulated from the primary coil, and being configured to cease superconducting at a lower temperature than the primary coil during operation of the magnet. A loss of superconductivity in the secondary HTS tape is detected. In response to said detection, energy is dumped from the primary coil into an external resistive load.
Ground fault overvoltage detection using negative sequence voltage monitoring
A negative sequence voltage (NSV) protection system is provided that can be added to existing equipment or included as a standalone device for detecting GFOV in electrical configurations connecting distributed energy resources to utility grids. The NSV protection system can be implemented at the low side of a distribution transformer of a typical distribution circuit or in a control system of inverter-based energy resources connected to a distribution feeder. The NSV protection system includes a passive monitoring system that outputs a trip signal when a potential GFOV is detected to occur. The trip signal can then be relayed to open the circuit breakers of a distribution circuit or to cause an inverter-based energy resource to trip offline.
Control and operation of power distribution system
Provided herein is a power distribution system comprising a main power bus, sub-buses coupled to the main power bus, and a controller. The sub-buses provide power to electrical components of a vehicle. Each of the sub-buses includes an electrically programmable fuse in series with a relay. The controller is configured to detect a fault in a sub-bus of the sub-buses, determine a fault type associated with the fault, and in response to determining the fault type, generate a command to cause the relay to change a relay state.
Voltage reference buffer circuit
Disclosed is a voltage reference buffer circuit including a first, second, third, and fourth bias generators and a first, second, third, and fourth driving components. The first, second, third, and fourth bias generators generate bias voltages to control the first, second, third, and fourth driving components respectively. The first, second, third, and fourth driving components are coupled in sequence, wherein the first and second driving components are different types of transistors and jointly output a first reference voltage, the third and fourth driving components are different types of transistors and jointly output a second reference voltage, and the group of the first and second driving components is separated from the group of the third and fourth driving components by a resistance load.
Pack monitoring unit for an electric aircraft battery pack and methods of use for battery management
An electric aircraft battery pack that includes an integrated battery management component, which determines if a power supply connection between the battery pack and the electric aircraft should be terminated due to a failure, defect, or malfunction of the battery pack, such as a failure of a battery module of the battery pack.
Power supply with current limit on individual conductors
Circuits, methods, and apparatus that may provide power supply voltages in a safe and reliable manner that meets safety and regulatory concerns and does not exceed physical limitations of cables and other circuits and components used to provide the power supply voltages. One example may provide a cable having a sufficient number of conductors to provide power without exceeding a maximum current density for the conductors. Another example may provide a cable having more than the sufficient number of conductors in order to provide an amount of redundancy. Current sense circuits may be included for one or more conductors. When an excess current is sensed, a power source in the power supply may be shut down, the power source may be disconnected from one or more conductors, or both events may occur.
Intelligent circuit breaker with dynamic coordination system
A power distribution system includes a first intelligent circuit breaker; a plurality of second intelligent circuit breakers, the second intelligent circuit breaker is structured to transmit the circuit breaker information to the first intelligent circuit breaker; and an energy monitoring device coupled to the first and second intelligent circuit breakers and structured to receive the circuit breaker information, the energy monitoring device including a dynamic coordination system structured to: (i) determine whether an adjustment to configuration setting of an intelligent circuit breaker is required based at least in part on the circuit breaker information, (ii) identify the intelligent circuit breaker with the configuration setting required to be adjusted based on a determination that the adjustment is required, and (iii) transmit an alert to user, indicating that the adjustment to the configuration setting of the identified intelligent circuit breaker is required and device address of the identified intelligent circuit breaker.
Control circuit for operating inductive load devices, a braking system, and a vehicle including a braking system
A control circuit for controlling the operation of a main switch device which manages an electrical current delivered to an inductive load device, the control circuit including: a current sense circuit configured to be coupled to the switch device and to output a signal representative of an electrical current through the inductive load device; a current comparator circuit configured to receive an actuation command signal, compare the signal representative of the electrical current through the inductive load device with a signal representative of a predetermined current, and to output a control signal based on the comparison for controlling the operation of the main switch device when the actuation command signal indicates that the inductive load device is to be activated; and a recirculation circuit configured to recirculate current through the inductive load device, such that the current used to activate the inductive load device is selectively provided by the main switch device and the recirculation circuit.
System for quench protection of superconducting machines, such as a superconducting wind turbine generator
A quench protection system for a superconducting machine, such as a superconducting generator having a plurality of series-arranged superconducting coils, includes at least one switch heater electrically coupled to each of the superconducting coils. A quench protection switch is provided in series with the coils, wherein each switch heater is in thermal contact with the quench protection switch. A heater network is configured in parallel with the quench protection switch and is in thermal contact with each of the coils. A quench of any one of the coils triggers a quench of the quench protection switch, wherein the heater network then triggers a quench of all of the remaining coils.
