20170029961 · 2017-02-02 ·

Provided is a system and method for preventing the chemical redox reaction, and thereby, corrosion between potable water and copper piping systems, which causes pinhole leaks in the copper piping systems. A sacrificial anode, made of a material, such as a metal or metal alloy less noble than copper, e.g., iron, zinc, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and/or alloys thereof, is electrically attached to the potable water copper piping system. Alternatively an active cathodic corrosion prevention system may be used. The active cathodic corrosion protection system is composed of an independent source of DC power, a voltage controller and a non-sacrificial grounding anode. The negative terminal of the voltage controller is connected to the potable water copper piping system. The system is maintained at a voltage and/or potential above the reduction potential of copper.

A cathodic protection device enclosing a reference cell and a conductive media and having two coupon assemblies mounted, facing opposing direction, on an exterior surface. The coupon assemblies each have a disc-shaped coupon seated in a coupon jacket and are electrically coupled to a wire. The coupon jacket defines a pocket in a first surface and a groove in a second, opposing surface thereof. The disc-shaped coupon is seated in the pocket and the wire is seated in the groove with the electrical junction therebetween aligned with an aperture connecting the pocket to the groove. A sealing material is used to form a watertight seal between the disc-shaped coupon and the pocket and fills the groove. The device includes a hydrophilic porous member having a first surface in communication with the conductive media and a second surface in communication with an external environment.

Method and System for Assessing a Metallic Structure Arranged within an Electrolyte

A method for assessing a structure arranged in an electrolyte includes connecting an electric source between the structure and a low resistive connection to the electrolyte via an earth, providing a direct and/or alternating current via the source, measuring a direct and an alternating voltage between a first and second electrode, the electrodes being in contact with the electrolyte at a measurement location and being arranged at a distance to each other. The first and second electrodes are connected to a voltage measurement device. A direct potential and an alternating potential is determined between the structure and the electrolyte at the measurement location, which may include measuring the DC potential and the AC potential between the structure and at least one additional electrode in contact with the electrolyte. A property of the structure may be assessed based on the measured DC and AC voltages, and the DC and AC potentials.

The method includes, using a structure management system, determining whether the source reading is less than a source threshold; obtaining an operation duration value, if the source reading is less than the source threshold; and determining whether the operation duration value is greater than an operation duration threshold. The method includes obtaining a potential difference, if the operation duration value is greater than an operation threshold; determining whether the potential difference is greater than or equal to a difference threshold; obtaining a surface area, if the potential difference is greater than or equal the difference threshold; and determining whether the surface area is greater than an area threshold. The method includes obtaining a severity probability, if the surface area is greater than the area threshold.

METHOD OF PREDICTING EXTERNAL CORROSION RISK ON BURIED GAS FLOWLINES

A method predicts external corrosion risk to facilitate maintenance operation of a pipeline network. The method includes disposing a cathodic protection (CP) system in a vicinity of the pipeline network, obtaining a measurement of a CP current produced by the CP system, comparing the measurement of the CP current to a pre-determined threshold to generate a designated level of the CP current, selectively determining, based on the designated level of the CP current, a conductor surface area of the pipeline, a coating factor of the pipeline network, and an exposure time of the CP current, an external corrosion risk level of the pipeline network, and selectively performing, based on the external corrosion risk level of the pipeline network, the maintenance operation of the pipeline network.
