Method for operating reverse-osmosis membrane treatment system

Provided is a method for operating an RO-membrane treatment system that includes an energy recovery device that recovers energy from the concentrate of an RO-membrane device and the RO-membrane treatment system that reduce the occurrence of biofouling in not only the RO-membrane device but also the energy recovery device in order to increase the energy efficiency of the entire system and operate the RO-membrane treatment system with consistency. The method includes adding at least one slime-control agent selected from a combined-chlorine slime-control agent and a stabilized-bromine slime-control agent to water that is to be treated with the reverse-osmosis-membrane device such that a residual halogen concentration in the concentrate that is to be introduced into the energy recovery device is 0.1 to 10000 mg/L as total chlorine.

The ballast water treatment system comprises of at least one ballast tank, at least one mixing nozzle, a treatment unit, wherein the treatment unit comprises an electrochlorination module and a dechlorination module, a dosing module, wherein the dosing module is coupled to the treatment unit, and a control system. The method comprises introducing ballast water into at least one ballast tank disposed on the vessel, circulating at least a portion of the ballast water between the at least one ballast tank and a dosing module, generating a disinfectant via a treatment unit, wherein the treatment unit comprises an electrochlorination unit and a dechlorination module, and delivering the disinfectant from the treatment unit to the circulating ballast water at the dosing module.

In some embodiments, a method may include reducing the microbial load in contaminated water of water recycle loops. These water recycling loops may include pulp and paper mills, cooling towers and water loops, evaporation ponds, feedstock processing systems and/or non-potable water systems. The methods may include providing a peracetate oxidant solution. The peracetate solution may include peracetate anions and a peracid. In some embodiments, the peracetate solution may include a pH from about pH 10 to about pH 12. In some embodiments, the peracetate solution has a molar ratio of peracetate anions to peracid ranging from about 60:1 to about 6000:1. In some embodiments, the peracetate solution has a molar ratio of peracetate to hydrogen peroxide of greater than about 16:1. The peracetate solution may provide bleaching, sanitizing and/or disinfection of contaminated water and surfaces. The peracetate oxidant solution may provide enhanced separation of microbes from contaminated water.
