FLUID DISINFECTION APPARATUS AND METHODS

Aspects of exemplary fluid disinfection apparatus and methods are described. One aspect is a disinfection apparatus comprising a body comprising a reflecting chamber, a fluid channel to direct a fluid into reflecting chamber, and radiation source positioned to output a disinfecting radiation into the chamber. The body may include an inlet and outlet. For example, the inlet may extend through the body to receive a fluid at a first velocity; the reflecting chamber may extend along an axis of the body; and the outlet may extend through an end of the reflecting chamber to discharge the fluid from the body. In this example, the fluid channel may direct the fluid from the inlet into the reflecting chamber at a second velocity smaller than the first velocity; and the radiation source may be positioned to output the disinfecting radiation into the reflecting chamber toward the outlet.

An ultraviolet disinfectant head attachable to a fluid container having a central axis for disinfecting a fluid housed in a cavity of the fluid container. The system comprises an ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED) having a principal emission axis and a lens (e.g. a diverging lens) having a primary optical axis. The lens is located and/or oriented to receive radiation from the UV-LED and direct refracted radiation toward the cavity of the fluid container. The refracted radiation may be diverging when it reaches a fill plane of the fluid container.

An active flash-light treatment system is configured to degrade organic pollutants in a liquid stream. The system includes a reactor configured to receive the liquid stream, a light source configured to generate an emitted light having a first wavelength range, an upstream sensor configured to measure a characteristic of the liquid stream before entering the reactor, and a controller configured to analyze the characteristic of the liquid stream and to select a wavelength-conversion material for the reactor, based on the characteristic of the liquid stream. The wavelength-conversion material is configured to absorb the emitted light and generate a converted light having a second wavelength range, different from the first wavelength range, and the converted light irradiates the liquid stream to degrade the organic pollutants.

A UV tube for killing microorganisms in a fluid generally includes a hollow tubular body, a UV isolation layer, and at least one UV light source. The hollow tubular body has an inlet port, an outlet port, and a fluid channel portion between the inlet port and the outlet port. The fluid channel portion has an inner surface. The UV isolation layer is disposed at the inner surface of the hollow tubular body for sheltering the inner surface of the hollow tubular body. The fluid is allowed to flow through the UV isolation layer. The UV light source is provided at the hollow tubular body and/or the UV isolation layer. The UV isolation layer can absorb and/or reflect the ultraviolet light emitting from the UV light source, so that the possibility of the fluid channel portion being irradiated by the UV light can be reduced.
