An apparatus for testing for streptococcal pharyngitis includes a tube having an open first end and a second end, and an opening on a side thereof, a dipstick inserted into the tube through the side opening, and an insert with a hole that can receive the dipstick and sized to nest the dipstick into the side opening of the tube. A swab at the end of the dipstick inside the tube receives microbes in a breath exhaled by a patient holding the first end of the tube to the patient's mouth. After being exhaled upon by the patient, the dipstick is removed for testing for the presence of microbes that cause streptococcal pharyngitis.

PATIENT SUPPORT APPARATUS WITH SPECTROMETER
20230190132 · 2023-06-22 ·

A patient support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, or the like, includes a frame, a support surface, an emitter, a detector, and a controller. The emitter and detector are coupled to the patient support apparatus at first and second locations, respectively. The emitter is adapted to emit electromagnetic waves in a direction aimed toward the detector. The detector is adapted to detect the electromagnetic waves emitted from the emitter. The controller is adapted to perform a spectral analysis of the detected electromagnetic waves to determine a parameter associated with the gas exhaled by a patient positioned on the patient support apparatus. The parameter may refer to a carbon dioxide level of gas exhaled by the patient, the patient's respiration rate, the patient's metabolic rate, or the like. The emitter, detector, and controller may alternatively be separate from, but attachable to, and in communication with, the patient support apparatus.

System for providing support therapy while determining concentrations of a molecular gaseous expired by a subject receiving pressure support therapy
09839754 · 2017-12-12 · ·

Pressure support therapy is provided to a subject. The effectiveness of the provided pressure support therapy is determined and/or the therapy is titrated based on determinations of the concentration of one or more gaseous molecular species in gas exhaled by the subject. The determinations of composition of gas exhaled by the subject are obtained from samples with relatively little distortion caused by dilution of expired gases from gases provided to the airway of the subject as part of the pressure support therapy.

Mouthpiece, system and method for enabling a measurement of analytes in exhaled air

A mouthpiece for a device for measuring analytes in exhaled air includes a gas path configured to convey exhaled air to the device and a film arranged so as to block the conveying of the exhaled air through the gas path. A system, in one embodiment, includes the mouthpiece and a device configured to measure analytes in the exhaled air. The mouthpiece is configured to be releasably connected to the device. The device includes a pressure sensor and, in one embodiment, a pump configured to pump air via the mouthpiece when connected to the device. The device is configured to be enabled to measure predefined analytes in the exhaled air when a pressure curve measured via the pressure sensor satisfies one or more predefined conditions.

Automated detection of breathing disturbances

Approaches to determining a sleep fitness score for a user are provided, such as may be based upon monitored breathing disturbances of a user.
