TUNG OIL-BASED NON-LAPPING WATER-COMPATIBLE WOOD STAIN
Water-based stains are based on an oil-in-water emulsion having a binder that includes, consists of, or consists essentially of drying oil combined with a non-aqueous polymer dispersion. The compositions can be tinted using traditional water-based pigment dispersions, yet the overall hydrophobicity results in minimal interaction with the polar cellulosic structure of wood.
GYPSUM BOARDS WITH POLYMER COATING AND METHODS FOR MAKING SAME
A gypsum board provided with a foamed gypsum core layer, a facing sheet over the foamed gypsum core, and a latex polymer coating layer on an outer surface of the facing sheet. The latex polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 0 to 35 F. Methods for making the board are also disclosed.
WHITE PIGMENT DISPERSIONS
A method for manufacturing low effective density TiO.sub.2 includes providing a template having a surface. The template surface is coated with a titanium-containing compound that can be reduced to TiO.sub.2 at high temperature. The template is removed, thereby forming porous TiO.sub.2 particles. The effective density of the porous TiO.sub.2 particles is less than 4.
Polymer, polymer modified titanium dioxide pigment, and method of forming a pigmented paint formulation
A new polymer that is capable of forming a composite with titanium dioxide particles and latex particles when admixed therewith is provided. The new polymer includes a water soluble polymer backbone, a first functional group attached to the polymer backbone and having an affinity for latex, and a second functional group attached to the polymer backbone and capable of forming a bond with titanium dioxide. A polymer modified titanium dioxide pigment and a method of forming a pigmented paint formulation are also provided.
Tie Layers Prepared from Particle-Containing Waterborne Suspensions
Waterborne suspensions include surface treated silica particles, a water dispersable binder resin, at least one surfactant, and an aqueous solvent. The surface treated silica particles have a mixture of hydrophobic and hydrophilic silane surface treatment agents, where the ratio of hydrophilic silane surface treatment agent to hydrophobic silane surface treatment agent is greater than 1. The waterborne suspensions can be coated and dried to form nanostructured tie layers, especially tie layers to silicone or (meth)acrylate layers.
White pigment dispersions
A white pigment dispersion includes 10 to 60 wt % of low effective density TiO.sub.2, 1 to 40 wt % of a latex, and the balance a dispersing medium. Inks using the low effective density TiO.sub.2 and methods for preparing the low effective density TiO.sub.2 are also disclosed.
ENHANCED PERFORMANCE OF MINERAL BASED AQUEOUS BARRIER COATINGS
A method for preparing an aqueous based coating system, and coating systems made thereby, for coating onto paper and/or paperboard for providing barrier to liquid, moisture vapor, oil and grease including a pigment and a polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system. One alternative of the method includes surface treating a pigment to form a pigment system and mixing a polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system with the pigment system. Another alternative of the method includes mixing a pigment and polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system and hydrophobizing the polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system by adding silanes, siloxanes, siloxane/silicone resin blends, or their carbon based analogs.
CLAYS WITH LOW PACKING DENSITY
A modified clay is disclosed which is characterized by an average shape factor less than 60, a sediment void volume greater than 48%, and containing less than 30% by mass of particles less than 1 micron in diameter. The modified clay may be used in products including coatings, paints, and other products where clays and pigments are used.
AQUEOUS POLYMER COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS
Aqueous alkyd resin emulsion compositions and methods of applying them for providing an exceptionally durable film capable of imparting a gloss sheen to the substrate while simultaneously entrapping pigments, MYLAR or glitter flakes, or other low aspect ratio materials so that they might durably adhere to a variety of surfaces, including, but not limited to, urethane rubber, vehicle tires, and vinyl. The emulsion compositions comprise an alkyd resin, a mixture of alkyd resins, a mixture of alkyd resins and conventional latex resins, or a mixture of all or part of the above and silicone oils. The low aspect ratio materials component of the compositions may be comprised of any combination of various pigments, MYLAR or metallic flakes, or standard glitter flakes, all in a wide variety of sizes, colors and shapes. The emulsion compositions also optionally comprise thickeners, metallic driers, defoamers, and/or preservatives. The methods comprise applying the alkyd resin emulsion composition with low aspect ratio materials to a substrate surface.

The methods generally comprise applying an alkyd resin emulsion composition to a substrate surface in need of treatment and allowing the composition to cure by oxidative polymerization on and within the surface.
