3D printed nasal pharyngeal and oral swabs

The invention is generally a nasal pharyngeal and oral swab that may be mass-produced via three-dimensional (3D) printing. To achieve the right materials for 3D printing the swabs, exemplary embodiments employ a set of materials that result in a rigid structure that has bendable properties (at least in the neck or stem region of the swab), but more rigid and bridle properties at a breakpoint of the swab. In exemplary embodiments, this may be achieved by constructing the device of a first photosensitive material that is generally soft and bendable when cured, and a second photosensitive material that is generally rigid and brittle when cured, wherein the soft bendable material comprises of about 70% to 90% of the photosensitive composition used to 3D print the swab, and the rigid and brittle material comprises of about 30% to 10% of the photosensitive composition used to 3D print the swab.

An optical analysis of saliva or a fluid-saliva mixture is performed in order to check whether the saliva or fluid-saliva mixture contains blood, which allows for determining whether or not a person may suffer from gingivitis or another condition affecting gum health. Light received from a representative volume of fluid (23) containing saliva is detected and analyzed. The analysis involves determination of at least one measurement value of light received by a light-receiving unit (25) for only a single wavelength of the light, particularly a wavelength that is associated with high absorption by a constituent of blood. It this respect, it is practical if the light-receiving unit (25) is configured to receive reflected light back from the volume of fluid (23). The optical analysis may be performed real-time during an action in a person's mouth involving a gum agitation effect, or after such action has taken place, for example.

In embodiments of the present disclosure, the sample loading chamber is arranged on the lower cover, and the sample loading area of the test strip is arranged at the outlet of the sample loading chamber.

An exemplary virometer has a molecular electronics sensor with a first electrode, a second electrode spaced-apart from the first electrode by a nanogap, a bridge molecule having a first end and a second end, the first end coupled to the first electrode and the second end coupled to the second electrode, a hybridization probe having an oligonucleotide sequence from or related to a viral target is conjugated to the bridge molecule, a sample applicator for acquiring a sample and transferring it to the chip, and data processing software and hardware for providing a report of detection of viral targets. Methods of using the virometer for testing in the home, in schools, in workplaces, in hotels, in restaurants, or in public places are also described.
