Harvesting cancellous bone and marrow from intramedullary canal formed in medullary cavity using bone press apparatus
Methods of harvesting cancellous bone and bone marrow include extracting loosened cancellous bone and bone marrow—including a liquid component thereof—to a collection container that has a first cup and a suction port to which a suction source is connected. After extraction, the suction source is disconnected and a lid of the collection container is removed and replaced with a lid having a plunger with a press head that is configured to filter the extracted liquid by depressing the plunger toward a bottom of the first cup. The filtered liquid is poured through a suction port into a second cup while depressing the plunger, thereby separating the liquid from a semi-solid mass of cancellous bone that remains. The bone is extracted through a cortical opening in the femur, tibia, or calcaneus, or from an intermedullary canal that is preferably formed by reaming of the tibia using an orthopedic reamer.

A medical, motor-operated or hand-operated or operable instrument includes a number of bearings for supporting a shaft for applying torque to a tool, of which bearings at least two selected or selectable bearings form a bearing pair. A distance sleeve axially spaces apart the bearings of the bearing pair. The instrument includes a component located at least partly radially inside the distance sleeve. The component is or can be rotationally coupled to at least one of the two bearings to rotate together with a rotating part of the at least one of the two bearings, or to form a rotating part of the at least one of the two bearings. At least one permanent magnet is fastened or formed on or in the component. A coil is arranged on or in the distance sleeve.
Robotic surgical system and methods utilizing a cutting bur for bone penetration and cannulation
Disclosed herein are techniques for preparation of a bone structure wherein a robotically controlled cutting bur is utilized for both milling the entry point at the outer cortical region and cannulation of the cancellous bone region for receipt of an implant. A robotic manipulator supports and moves the cutting bur and one or more controllers analyze measurements from sensors and, in response, control the robotic manipulator and/or the cutting bur for purposes such as landmark detection to determine entry point, avoiding tool skiving at entry point, and avoidance of cortical wall breach during cannulation. Also described are techniques for managing feed rate, rotational cutting speed, or mode of operation depending on operational conditions surrounding various stages of cannulation. A control interface is also provided to enable the user to manage or adjust cutting bur operation and feed rate.
Devices and methods for intrabody surgery
A device for intrabody surgery comprises a cutting arrangement rotatable by a hollow driveshaft, which is formed by a hollow front cutting region and a rear region. The front region includes multiple longitudinal drilling sections interconnected by transversely oriented cutting blade sections. The drilling sections are positioned at an angle to each other defining in combination with the cutting blades a conically shaped grid formation having a hollow internal cavity. The grid formation defines a plurality of ports between the drilling sections and the blades. A low-pressure zone is formed within the hollow internal cavity, wherein cut occlusion materials are aspired by the low-pressure zone through the plurality of ports into the hollow internal cavity for further evacuation from the cutting arrangement.

The drill bit further comprises a resilient arm extending from a proximal end of the shank. The resilient arm comprises an outer arm surface facing away from the axis and a retention surface facing toward a distal end of the shank. The retention surface may be radially aligned about the axis with respect to the outermost drive portion. The resilient arm is movable between: a first position where the outer arm surface is spaced from the axis at a first arm distance greater than the first interface distance, and a second position where the outer arm surface is spaced from the axis at a second arm distance less than or equal to the first interface distance.
