A medical device having a mechanism adapted to convert a single translational input into multiple rotational outputs. An embodiment includes a hinge pin assembly in operable communication with a single input actuator. The hinge pin assembly includes a housing configured to translate in response to actuation of the input actuator. The housing translates about the length of a hinge pin. The housing has a plurality of concentrically aligned annular rings. An upper pinion and a lower pinion are in operable communication with the housing such that linear translation of the housing cause the pinions to rotate. Each pinion is in operable communication with linear gear racks, axles, or other force transferring components. The force transferring components are in operable communication with a pivotable distal end of the medical device. As a result, the linear input causes each distal end of the medical device to pivot with respect to its respective shank.

A surgical instrument includes a first lever element and a second lever element interconnected by a lever element hinge. Each lever element includes a grip portion and a jaw portion. A first spring portion and a second spring portion are proximally connected to the grip portions. A proximal free end of the first spring portion is coupled to a proximal free end of the second spring portion by a hinged joint. The hinged joint includes a hinge pin and at least one bearing eye. The at least one bearing eye forms a continuous longitudinal slit for radial insertion of the hinge pin. The slit extends diagonally relative to the axis of the at least one bearing eye so that at least one spring portion has to be twisted during radial insertion of the hinge pin into the at least one bearing eye.

The movable handle is movable relative to the fixed handle between open and closed positions and is coupled to the drive bar via a first pin on the axis. The linkage includes a first end portion coupled to the movable handle via a second pin and a second end portion coupled to the shaft via a third pin on the axis. In the closed position of the movable handle, the second pin is disposed in a near-over-center position relative to the axis to reduce a force necessary to maintain the movable handle in the closed position.

A clamp arm actuator connected to the clamp arm assembly directs the clamp arm assembly from the opened position toward the closed position. An outer sheath surrounds at least a portion of the ultrasonic waveguide. The outer sheath includes a cover removably received against a sheath body, and a sheath securement feature able to detachably couple the cover to the sheath body such that the cover can be detached from the sheath body for accessing the ultrasonic waveguide within the outer sheath.

The interface assembly comprises a plurality of drive components associated with drive shafts driven by an external system and each drive component is associated with a section of the base. The drive components are operable to cause rotation of one or both of the shaft or end effector and movement of components of the end effector. The drive components are further operable to cause articulation of the articulation section. The base sections are pivotable toward each other to couple with the shaft assembly or away from each other to disengage the shaft assembly.
