In the first configuration the tool operates as forceps and in the second configuration the tool operates as scissors. In the intermediate configuration the tool operates as a probe. The tips can be brought together to transition between the first configuration and the intermediate configuration. The tips can be rotated to transition between the intermediate configuration and the second configuration. Method are disclosed that include the step of providing a tool having a first tip extending distally and a second tip extending distally, moving at least one of the first tip and the second tip toward the other of the first tip and the second tip, and rotating the first tip and the second tip.

Surgical instrument

A surgical instrument comprises a shaft, wherein a deflectable articulation section is formed at the shaft, a proximal handling portion at a proximal end of the shaft, a distal effector at a distal end of the shaft, and a deflection mechanism for controlling a bending state of the articulation section. The deflection mechanism comprises a first pull element for a deflection movement and a second pull element for a return movement. The first pull element and the second pull element are jointly pretensioned during the movement of the articulation section. An interface is provided where the instrument is demountable into a distal shaft assembly and a proximal handle piece, wherein the effector is controlled via an actuation mechanism that passes through the interface in a mounted state. The actuation mechanism comprises a push piece having a distal end that is coupled with the effector and a proximal end that is actuable by a pushing movement.

LAPAROSCOPIC GRASPERS AND SYSTEMS THEREFOR

Described here are systems, devices, and methods for providing remote manipulation or traction to tissue using one or more graspers, delivery devices, and magnetic control assemblies. The graspers may be configured for insertion into the patient during a minimally-invasive procedure, such as a laparoscopic operation. The graspers may be configured to releasably connect to tissue. In some embodiments, the grasper may comprise a clip, a clamp, a suction device, a coil, or the like, and may be configured to connect to any suitable tissue. Delivery devices may be configured to releasably engage a grasper to deliver the grasper, remove it from the patient, or reposition it. The delivery devices may additionally be configured to actuate the grasper to attach it to tissue and/or detach it from tissue. The magnetic control elements may be configured to be positioned externally of the body to move, reposition, and/or hold the grasper.

A surgical instrument made from flexibly resilient sheet metal has a handle formed into a sheet metal beam having a convex shape for improved strength. DISTAL FORCE SENSING IN THREE DIMENSIONS FOR ACTUATED INSTRUMENTS: DESIGN, CALIBRATION, AND FORCE COMPUTATION

The present invention is directed to a device to firmly grasp and manipulate delicate tissues in microsurgery, while precisely measuring tool-tissue interaction forces in three dimensions (x-y-z). The design enables precise measurement of forces at the tool tip without being influenced by other forces that may act on the tool shaft. The device of the present invention is capable of measuring axial (z) forces together with the transverse forces (x-y) on an actuated (not static) instrument. Fiber optic sensors are embedded into strategic locations of the design to decouple and precisely detect force components (x-y-z) separately. The force information is used to provide feedback to the operator, or to a robotic platform. The exerted forces on critical tissues, such as the retina in eye surgery, can be maintained at a safe level, clinical complications due to excessive forces can be lessened, safety, and outcome of microsurgical procedures can be enhanced.
