ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANTS AND INSTRUMENTS FOR DELIVERING THE SAME

A fracture treatment system can include a pair of implants cross-pinned into the medullary canal of a bone, guided by at least one guide wire with at least two diameters. The system allows for more accurate sizing of the length of implants needed to achieve bicortical purchase for enhanced stability, as well as anti-rotation of the fracture site. The more accurate sizing and placement of the cross-pinned implants additionally allow both ends of the implants to recess beneath or be flush with the outer surface of the bone, which can reduce the risk of infection. The guide wire can allow the implants to be inserted using a cannulated technique for easier surgical procedure and better outcome, with the implants having sufficient wall thickness for the desired length to achieve bicortical purchase while keeping the shaft outer diameter of the implant to be similar to a diameter of the guide wire.

DISTAL FEMORAL CUTTING BLOCK INSTRUMENT

A medical device to facilitate a distal femoral cut of a femur of a patient is described herein. Such medical devices can include a base having a planar surface along a first plane between a distal end and a proximal end of the base. The medical device also includes one or more projections extending from the distal end of the base. The medical device also includes a cutting guide used to guide cutting of the distal femoral cut and a mounting mechanism that is used to releasably couple the cutting guide to the proximal end of the base. The base, the one or more projections, and the cutting guide are configured to engage various surfaces femoral condyles of the femur when the medical device is placed on a knee joint without requiring insertion of an intermedullary femoral rod into the femoral canal of the knee.

Bone attachment assembly

A bone attachment assembly may include an attachment head, a set screw configured to attach to the attachment head, and a rod surface with a first raised portion and a second raised portion that define a lowered portion positioned between the first raised portion and the second raised portion. The first raised portion, the second raised portion, and the set screw may be configured to directly contact a rod in order to retain the rod within the attachment head.

Bone anchor with deployable purchase element

A bone anchor is provided for connecting a rod to a bone structure, the bone anchor having a rod housing configured to accommodate the rod; a cavity distal to the rod housing dimensioned to accommodate the bone structure; and a deployable purchase element capable of assuming a deployed position in which the purchase element protrudes into the cavity, and capable of assuming a non-deployed position in which the purchase element does not substantially protrude into the cavity.

Length adjustable modular screw system

A length adjustable modular screw includes a neck assembly and a shank. The neck assembly has proximal and distal ends and includes an expander component and a collet component that are slidably engagable by insertion of the expander component in a through channel of the collet component along a common axis. The length adjustable modular screw also includes a shank suitable for insertion and retention within a bone, the shank including a threaded portion between proximal and distal ends and a socket adapted to coaxially receive at least a portion of the distal end of the neck assembly. The length adjustable modular screw has a length that is selected by splaying at least a portion of the distal end of the engaged expander and collet components of the neck assembly within the socket of the shank.

Bone cut guide apparatus and method

A bone cut guide includes a stem having a stem longitudinal axis and an anchoring portion proximal to the stem and connected to the stem by a cut body. The anchoring portion includes an anchoring opening configured to receive a wire therethrough to connect the anchoring portion to a bone. The cut body includes a cut slot configured to receive a saw to cut the bone.

K-wire implants for fractures

A variety of K-wires with imbedded plates are disclosed that allow for the plate in K-wire to be secured to the bone after insertion. Further, a donut shaped washer for capturing and securing the K-wire is disclosed. Also, a screw with a channel is disclosed that has a head shaped to capture and secure the K-wire. Finally, embodiments of a slotted washer are disclosed that captures and secures the K-wire.

Surgical instruments and methods for selectively coupling to an object

Instruments and methods for selectively coupling to an object are provided, for example surgical instruments that can form a rigid connection with an object and also be disassembled for cleaning, sterilization, etc. One embodiment includes an elongate shaft with a longitudinal groove, a first partial circumferential groove that intersects with a distal end of the longitudinal groove, and a second at least partial circumferential groove formed distal to the first partial circumferential groove. The instrument also includes a sleeve disposed over the elongate shaft that includes a protrusion extending from an internal wall that is received within the longitudinal groove to constrain movement of the sleeve relative to the elongate shaft. The sleeve further includes a lock that interfaces with the second at least partial circumferential groove when the protrusion is disposed in the first partial circumferential groove to further selectively constrain axial and rotational movement of the sleeve.

SURGICAL TETHER APPARATUS AND METHODS OF USE

A spinal treatment system includes a constraint device having an upper tether portion, a lower tether portion and a compliance member coupled therebetween. The upper tether portion is coupled with a superior spinous process of a spinal segment in a patient and the lower tether portion is coupled with an inferior spinous process or sacrum of the spinal segment. The length or tension in the constraint device is adjustable so that the construct of the tether portions and the compliance member provides a force resistant to flexion of the spinal segment. The system also includes a first prosthesis coupled with the spinal segment, wherein the constraint device modulates loads borne by the prosthesis or by tissue adjacent thereto.

LAG SCREW SYSTEMS AND NAIL SYSTEMS AND METHODS INCORPORATING THE SAME

A trochanteric fracture nail system includes: a trochanteric fracture nail and a lag screw system adapted and configured for fixation medially through the trochanteric fracture nail. The trochanteric fracture nail includes: a substantially cylindrical wall defining a longitudinal bore; at least one lateral bore intersecting the longitudinal bore; and a detent on an inner surface of at least one of the at least one lateral bore.
