The lockout key is movable between an unactuated position and an actuated position during the staple firing stroke. The lockout key lifts the firing member over the blocking member when the lockout key is moved from the unactuated position toward the actuated position.

The brushless motor is configured to transmit rotary motions to the drive gear. The control circuit is configured to control the supply of power from a power source to the brushless motor. The bailout lever is configured to be manually actuated by a user of the surgical instrument between an unactuated position and an actuated position to retract the firing member. The brushless motor is back-driven when the bailout lever is moved from the unactuated position to the actuated position.

The memory stores machine executable instructions that when executed by the microcontroller cause the microcontroller to execute the above method.
