Methods and apparatus for joint distraction

A method of treating a patient's joint having opposing joint surfaces includes providing an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end and an expandable member near the distal end. The expandable member is positioned in the joint between the joint surfaces and expanded so as to separate the joint surfaces away from one another into a distracted position. The joint is manipulated while in the distracted position so that the joint is distracted and in flexion. A diagnostic or therapeutic procedure is then performed on the joint while maintaining the joint in the flexed and distracted position.

A cooling pack including a reservoir and inlet and outlet tubes extending from a bottom of the reservoir is applied to the pocket such that the inlet and outlet tubes pass through the lower opening of the pocket.

The pelvic fracture splint also includes a plurality of strips (preferably three strips) selectively fastening the opposing ends of the first portion and the second portion of the pelvic fracture splint to secure the pelvic fracture splint around the person's waist or hips and groin. The first portion includes a plurality of splints (rigid supports, preferably six in number) vertically positioned along the first portion at spaced apart positions. The opening in the second portion of the pelvic fracture splint may have a triangular shape to avoid placing any unnecessary pressure on the person's genitals.

The orthosis still further includes a rotation strap extending from the bottom of the pocket to a location on the waist strap proximate to the top of the pocket.
