Process for producing short-chain end-group-functionalized macromolecules based on styrene

End-group-functionalized oligomers with controlled degrees of functionality based on styrene are produced by reacting the monomer with a regulator by means of free-radical polymerization. At least some of the quantity of regulator is added according to a prescribed program so that at every juncture t the value of the quantitative fraction added up to said juncture does not fall short of the value of the respective conversion U(t) in the polymerization reaction at said juncture t by more than 5 percentage points and does not exceed said value U(t) by more than 5 percentage points.

A fluorine-free composition includes one or more compounds derived from a reaction mixture that includes: (i) at least one isocyanate-reactive (i.e., functionalized) oligomer comprising 2 to 20 repeating units; (ii) at least one polyisocyanate; (iii) optionally at least one additional isocyanate-reactive compound; and (iv) optionally at least one isocyanate blocking agent; wherein the isocyanate-reactive oligomer is made by the radical-initiated reaction of a reaction mixture comprising at least one mercaptan and Sat least one (meth)acrylate monomer, wherein the at least one (meth)acrylate monomer comprises at least one isocyanate-derived group (e.g., a urethane group or a urea group) and at least one hydrocarbon group having at least 16 carbon atoms (and in some embodiments, up to 60 carbon atoms). Such compositions are useful for treating fibrous substrates to enhance their water-repellency.

Furthermore, according to certain embodiments, polymers can, surprisingly, be directly deposited onto layers comprising low molecular weight fluorinated polymers, e.g., without swelling in the presence of certain solvents. Some embodiments are generally directed to devices and methods for treating fluorinated polymers and subsequently depositing material onto the treated fluorinated polymers. This may allow the fabrication and patterning of multilayered articles comprising fluorinated elastomers.
