Selective plating of three dimensional surfaces to produce decorative and functional effects

A method of creating a selectively plated three-dimensional thermoplastic part. The method includes the steps of: a) providing a film of uncured polycarbonate film having a hardcoated layer on a first surface thereof; b) selectively catalyzing the polycarbonate film by depositing a catalyst in a desired pattern on the first surface of the polycarbonate film; c) thermoforming the polycarbonate film to form a three-dimensional polycarbonate film; d) UV-curing the hardcoated polycarbonate film by irradiating the film with UV rays; e) molding the hardcoated polycarbonate film to produce a three-dimensional molded part comprising the hardcoated polycarbonate film; f) activating the selectively catalyzed hardcoated polycarbonate film; and g) plating a metal layer on the catalyzed portions of the hardcoated polycarbonate film, wherein the plated metal only deposits on the catalyzed portions of the hardcoated polycarbonate film.

Metal coating of objects using plasma polymerisation pretreatment

A method for applying a metal on a substrate comprises: a) applying a coating by treatment in a plasma, comprising a compound selected from alkanes up to 10 carbon atoms, and unsaturated monomers, and b1) producing polymers on the surface of the substrate, the polymers comprising carboxylic groups and adsorbed ions of a second metal, reducing the ions to the second metal, or alternatively b2) producing polymers on the surface, bringing the surface of the substrate in contact with a dispersion of colloidal metal particles of at least one second metal, and c) depositing the first metal on the second metal. Advantages include that materials sensitive to, for instance, low pH or solvents can be coated. Substrates including glass, SiO.sub.2 with very few or no abstractable hydrogen atoms as well as polymer materials containing halogen atoms can be coated with good adhesion.

Linear shape member and producing method therefor

A linear shape member is composed of a linear shape electrical insulating body comprising irregularities on a surface, and a plating layer coating the surface of the electrical insulating body. An average irregularities spacing Sm of the irregularities is not more than 20.0 m.

Catalytic Laminate with Conductive Traces formed during Lamination

A circuit board is formed from a catalytic laminate having a resin rich surface with catalytic particles dispersed below a surface exclusion depth. Trace channels and apertures are formed into the catalytic laminate, electroless plated with a metal such as copper, filled with a conductive paste containing metallic particles, which are then melted to form traces. In a variation, multiple circuit board layers have channels formed into the surface below the exclusion depth, apertures formed, are electroless plated, and the channels and apertures filled with metal particles. Several such catalytic laminate layers are placed together and pressed together under elevated temperature until the catalytic laminate layers laminate together and metal particles form into traces for a multi-layer circuit board.

Plated fiber-reinforced member and plating method for fiber-reinforced member

A plated plated fiber-reinforced member includes: a fiber-reinforced member formed of a composite fiber material in which multiple reinforcing fibers dispersed in a resin, some of the multiple reinforcing fibers being allowed so that portions thereof protruding from a surface of the resin; and an electroless-plated layer formed on the fiber-reinforced member to cover the surface of the resin and the portions of the reinforcing fibers protruded from the surface of the resin.

Plating method

The present invention provides a plating method capable of easily performing various decorative plating processes. The plating method includes a bulge forming process of forming a bulge on an object to be plated by ejecting ink drops of first UV-curable ink from an inkjet head such that the ejected ink drops land on the object, and a plating process of plating the object having the bulge formed thereon, after the bulge forming process. Also, in the bulge forming process, the bulge is formed such that a second surface of the bulge to be plated has surface roughness different from that of a first surface of the object to be plated.

A method for the manufacture of plastic components that are corrosion-stable, optionally coated in metallic color and decorative first manufactures the components to be coated from a galvanizable plastic in the plastic injection-molding process and then subjects them to a chemical pretreatment, in which a first conductive metal layer is deposited and then an aluminum surface is deposited galvanically. The deposited aluminum surface is oxidized in a subsequent aluminum anodization process.
