System, methods and apparatus related to surgical articles used during surgery. The system, methods and apparatus may include features such as an element/substrate added to surgical articles which enables the recognition by human visualization of the surgical articles when left inside patient bodies when viewed with medical imaging technologies. The element/substrate may include a plurality of three dimensional objects. Alternatively, the element/substrate may comprise a ribbon of radiopaque material having cut-puts or other radiolucent regions which provide image artifacts observable under fluoroscopic imaging.

DIAPER STATE SENSOR AND NOTIFICATION NETWORK
A diaper state change notification device has a power source, a micro controller capable of generating a notification, a wireless communications chip, and one or more sensors incorporated in the device or coupled thereto, characterized in that the notification device is attached to or otherwise embedded within a diaper and generates and sends a notification to a monitoring entity upon sensor detection of a diaper state change from a fresh diaper state to a soiled diaper state.

A system for intervening in an absorbent article change process by a user to improve the experience of the absorbent article change process is disclosed. The system can include a memory device, an auditory capture mechanism, and a processor. The memory device can be configured to store an absorbent article acoustic signature model. The absorbent article acoustic signature model can be indicative of a potential change of the absorbent article. The processor can be configured to analyze a captured potential use sound profile in relation to the absorbent article acoustic signature model and to interpret the first qualifying match in view of at least one environmental input. The system can be configured to selectively generate a first output based on the first qualifying match and the at least one environmental input. The first output can be recognizable by the user through visual, audible, or olfactory senses.
Detectable sponges for use in medical procedures and methods of making, packaging, and accounting for same
Sponges suitable for use in medical procedures may include radio-opaque material, and arranged to allow individual sponges in a set, packet or package of sponges to be readily discernable using imaging technology (e.g., X-ray) to allow accurate counting of sponges. The sponges may include wireless transponders, for instance LC resonant and/or RFID transponders. Gauze or similar material is folded to enhance the ability to count the sponges. Sponges are counted and banded or packaged to provide assurance that the count is accurate.

In another embodiment, the apparatus has a plurality of lower antennas and an upper antenna for generating a detection field and for receiving data which identifies said objects. Various surgical devices with identifiers and methods for preventing electromagnetic coupling between and protecting objects and identifier are also provided. The invention further provides apparatus and methods comprising a handheld scanner and a mat adapted to underlie a patient during a surgical procedure.

SURGICAL SPONGES WITH FLEXIBLE RFID TAGS
A surgical sponge is provided, having a radiofrequency (RF) tag positioned interior thereto. The RF tag has a base layer with at least one tab projecting from an outer perimeter of thereof. The RF tag has a first protective layer with at least one tab projecting from the outer perimeter of the RF tag and generally aligned with the at least one tab of the base layer and an RF identifier laminated between the base layer and the first protective layer. The RF identifier has an antenna, and an electrically responsive member. The antenna can be a metal foil loop antenna etched on to the base layer. The RF identifier can include additional metal foil provided on the base layer when the metal foil loop antenna is etched on to the base layer, the additional metal foil configured to enhance x-ray opacity of the sponge.
