Transgenic plants with enhanced agronomic traits

This invention provides recombinant DNA constructs, transgenic plant nuclei and cells with such recombinant DNA construct for expression of proteins that are useful for imparting enhanced agronomic trait(s) to transgenic crop plants. This invention also provides transgenic plants and progeny seed comprising the transgenic plant cells where the plants are selected for having an enhanced trait selected from the group of traits consisting of enhanced water use efficiency, enhanced cold tolerance, increased yield, enhanced nitrogen use efficiency, enhanced seed protein and enhanced seed oil. Also disclosed are methods for manufacturing transgenic seed and plants with enhanced traits.

CONTROL OF PHENOTYPE IN PLANTS

The invention provides a compositions and methods for controlling phenotypic traits in plants. Genes of interest are placed under the control of a gene switch to allow inducible control or expression of a gene of interest “on-demand” by treatment of the plant with a chemical ligand.

TRANSGENIC PLANTS WITH ENHANCED TRAITS

This disclosure provides recombinant DNA constructs and transgenic plants having enhanced traits such as increased yield, increased nitrogen use efficiency, and enhanced drought tolerance or water use efficiency. Transgenic plants may include field crops as well as plant propagules, plant parts and progeny of such transgenic plants. Methods of making and using such transgenic plants are also provided. This disclosure also provides methods of producing seed from such transgenic plants, growing such seed, and selecting progeny plants with enhanced traits. Also disclosed are transgenic plants with altered phenotypes which are useful for screening and selecting transgenic events for the desired enhanced trait.

USE OF ZmSBP12 GENE IN REGULATION OF DROUGHT RESISTANCE, PLANT HEIGHT, AND EAR HEIGHT OF ZEA MAYS L.

A use of a ZmSBP12 gene in the regulation of drought resistance, plant height, and ear height of Zea mays L. is provided. After the ZmSBP12 gene is over-expressed in Zea mays L., the resulting Zea mays L. mutant plant exhibits increased drought resistance and decreased plant and ear heights. The overexpression of the ZmSBP12 gene leads to increased drought resistance and decreased plant and ear heights, indicating that the ZmSBP12 gene plays a crucial role in the drought resistance and plant type (plant height) of Zea mays L. The expression abundance of the ZmSBP12 gene is increased to improve the drought resistance of Zea mays L. and reduce the plant and ear heights of Zea mays L., which can be used for the assisted breeding of novel drought-resistant and lodging-resistant Zea mays L. varieties and the breeding of excellent inbred lines and hybrids of Zea mays L.
