The method comprises: performing a washing phase in which detergent is delivered into the tub; and performing a number of rinsing phases wherein detergent from the washing phase is removed using water from said water supply apparatus, wherein the control unit sets the number of rinsing phases according to whether the softener signal assumes the first value or the second value.
