VISCOUS VIBRATION DAMPING OF TORSIONAL OSCILLATION
20250230716 · 2025-07-17 ·

An apparatus for damping vibrations includes an inertial mass disposed in a cavity in a rotatable downhole component, the rotatable component configured to be disposed in a borehole in a subsurface formation, such as a resource bearing formation, the inertial mass coupled to a surface of the cavity by a damping fluid and configured to move within the cavity relative to the downhole component. The apparatus also includes a damping fluid disposed in the cavity between the inertial mass and an inner surface of the cavity, where rotational acceleration of the rotatable downhole component causes shear in the damping fluid to dissipate energy from rotational acceleration of the rotatable downhole component and causing the rotational acceleration to be reduced.

A stop collar for mounting to a downhole tubular includes: a cylindrical housing having a threaded inner surface and a tapered inner surface; a compressible slip ring having teeth formed in an inner surface thereof and a pair of tapered outer surfaces; a solid cam ring having a tapered inner surface; and a cylindrical bolt having a threaded outer surface. A natural outer diameter of each ring is greater than a minor diameter of the threaded surfaces. Screwing the threaded surfaces of the housing and the bolt is operable to drive the tapered surfaces together, thereby compressing the slip ring such that the teeth engage a periphery of the tubular.

Sensor system for tong assembly

A method of connecting or disconnecting a first tubular to a second tubular includes engaging the first tubular with a power tong; engaging the second tubular with a backup tong; and rotating the first tubular relative to the second tubular. The method also includes, while rotating, monitoring a distance between the backup tong and the power tong and comparing the distance to a first threshold value; and stopping rotation of the first tubular when the distance equals to the first threshold value. According to one embodiment, a tong assembly includes a power tong, a backup tong, a sensor configured to measure a distance between the power tong and the backup tong, and a controller configured to compare the distance to a threshold value.

A thread protector that includes an end cap for engaging with a pin end or box end of a tubular member and a securing apparatus extending from the end cap to frictionally engage an inner side of the tubular member to maintain the thread protector's engagement with the tubular member. The securing apparatus includes a plurality of leg assemblies to engage the inside of the tubular member. The thread protector also includes a bolt extending through an opening in the end cap that actuates the leg assemblies when the bolt is turned. Another thread protector that includes a cup end for engaging with a pin end or box end of a tubular member and the cup end has an end plate. The thread protector also includes a protective sleeve extending from the end plate of the cup end outside of the tubular member wherein the protective sleeve has inner threads disposed on an inside part. The thread protector further includes a releasable sleeve selectively securable around the tubular member with outer threads disposed on an outside portion whereby the outer threads on the releasable sleeve can engage the inner threads on the protective sleeve. A method of protecting pin threads of pin ends of tubular members. The method includes installing a thread protector on a pin end or a box end of a tubular member to protect threads disposed on the pin end or the box end of the tubular member.

EMERGENCY DISCONNECT ISOLATION VALVE
20230043285 · 2023-02-09 ·

An isolation valve system, method, and apparatus are provided that can isolate a wellbore and prevent fluids from exiting the well and prevent seawater from entering the well. The system can be a two-part design in some embodiments where a shear sub is selectively interconnected to a body via shearing screws. A sufficient force on the shear sub destroys the shearing screws and the shear sub is removed from the body. This movement rotates an actuator on the body, which in turn rotates a valve in the body to provide the isolating function during routine operation of a wellbore or during an emergency.

Concentric coiled tubing downline for hydrate remediation

A hydrate remediation system and method utilizing a concentric coiled tubing downline is provided. The concentric coiled tubing downline includes an outer coiled tubing and an inner coiled tubing, the inner coiled tubing disposed within the outer coiled tubing and extending at least partially through the outer coiled tubing. The concentric coiled tubing downline may be deployed from a single surface reel housed on a surface vessel. A bottom hole assembly (BHA) including a subsea connector is disposed at a distal end of the concentric coiled tubing. The subsea connector of the BHA is configured to be connected to the subsea interface that will be depressurized via the concentric coiled tubing downline. The concentric coiled tubing downline may provide two flow paths. Pressurized gas flows down one flow path, and effluent from the hydrate remediation flows up to the surface via the other flow path.
