Rod hang-off system
09828823 · 2017-11-28 · ·

A hang-off system for suspending a rod string within a well is provided. In one embodiment, such a system includes a hang-off ram of a blowout preventer and a hang-off sub sized to fit within a bore of the blowout preventer. The hang-off ram and the hang-off sub have complementary surfaces that enable the hang-off ram to engage the hang-off sub within the blowout preventer to facilitate suspension of a sucker-rod string in a well from the hang-off sub. Additional systems, devices, and methods are also disclosed.

Cable-based well heater

A resistive cable-based well heater for providing heat to an oil or gas bearing formation includes a length of coiled tubing having a sealed down-hole end and an open-ended cable support adapter attached to the up-hole end of the coiled tubing. A bundle of cables is contained within the coiled tubing. The cables extend from the upper opening of the adapter and have free upper ends. A wedging tube is placed in the open end of the adapter to support the cables against the interior sidewall of the adapter when the well heater is deployed in a well. The wedging tube has an inner surface shaped to conform to the shape of one or more of the cables and an outer surface configured for weight bearing frictional contact with the inner sidewall of the cable support adapter.

Automatic wire spooling control

Systems and methods can be used in connection with a wellbore environment for automatically controlling wire being spooled around a drum. A system comprising a spooler, a sensor assembly, and a communication link can be used to adjust the position of wire being spooled around a drum. A first motor can control the spooler and a second motor can control the sensor assembly. The spooler can be positioned to control spooling of wire around the drum as the drum rotates to reel in wire. The sensor assembly can be configured to detect a distance between the sensor assembly and the wire being spooled. A communication link can communicatively couple the sensor assembly with the first motor and the second motor to control movement of the spooler and the sensor assembly relative to the drum based on the distance detected by the sensor assembly.

Mousehole tubular retention system
09784053 · 2017-10-10 · ·

The systems, devices, and methods described herein describe a tubular retention system arranged over a mousehole. The tubular retention system includes load bearing plates that are mutually opposed, vertically aligned, and connected to an eternal support structure via upper and lower links that, together, form a parallelogram shape movable to engage tubulars of varying diameters. The load bearing plates are pulled down by a biasing system to engage the tubular and synchronized by a lifting ring connecting the load bearing plates together. Mutually opposing deflector plates are connected to the load bearing plates and move in response to the downward movement of the load bearing plates, providing a centering force against the tubular to assure proper retention once the load bearing links engage the tubular. An upward force enables the load bearing plates to return upward and outward to release the tubular.

LINK CONNECTOR

A link connector configured to connect a set of links together. The link connector has a body having an upper portion and a lower portion. A first blocking member is pivotably coupled to the upper portion of the body by a pin member. A second blocking member is pivotably coupled to the lower portion of the body by a pin member. The first and second blocking members are movable between an open position and a closed position such that when in the closed position the link connector forms an 8 shape.

Alarm Systems and Methods for Preventing Improper Lifting of Tubular Members
20170247234 · 2017-08-31 ·

Systems and methods for preventing improper lifting of tubular members are described, in which sensing devices are used to detect when a tubular reaches a selected position within a lifting device suitable for engagement, and/or to detect when a lifting operation is initiated that would exceed the capacity of a lifting device. Operators are engaged with the tubular member and provided with a preselected force corresponding to the weight of one or more tubular members, such that when the weight of a lifting operation exceeds the preselected force, an audible device may be actuated responsive to sensor output, to immediately alert individuals, such that the improper lifting operation may be halted. Similarly, an audible device may be actuated responsive to sensor output when a tubular member reaches a selected position within the lifting device, such that additional movement may be ceased.
