FRAGMENT-, OVERPRESSURE-, RADIATION-, AND TOXIC-RESISTANT EMERGENCY SAFETY SHELTER

A modular safety shelter provides protection from fragment, overpressure, radiation, and toxic hazards through a combination of physical design of modular segments, of joint seals between modular segments, of door assemblies, and of HVAC control systems. The modular shelter is formed of two or more prefabricated concrete modular segments each including a built-in foundation, roof, and side walls, and a prefabricated concrete vestibule segment providing an airlock-like access to the shelter. The prefabricated modular segments and vestibule segment are transported to a site and assembled to each other on-site to provide a fully enclosed space within the modular shelter. A multi-layer joint seal is formed between adjacent modular segments to prevent ingress of toxic, flammable, or thermal hazards. An integrated HVAC controller monitors toxic or flammable hazards outside and inside of the shelter, and controls HVAC systems to minimize spread of contaminants upon detecting a hazard.

Mobile insulation system

Rigid wall shelters are used throughout the world for shipping, living quarters, and housing for electronic systems and are energy inefficient. While investigating energy-efficient technologies for rigid wall shelters the discovery was made to insulate the outside of the shelter rather than the inside. Space is often limited inside of the shelter. The invention of an external, re-deployable insulation system was developed. The present invention is an insulating system composed of three main components. The first component is multiple, flexible envelopes filled with insulating materials (which creates a panel). The second component is multiple insulating strips that cover the joint between the panels. The final component is a weatherproof outer covering that protects the entire system from the elements.

A composite stud wall panel assembly, which can be used alone as a blast panel or as a module for wall or roof structures, comprises a frame including a plurality of spaced apart metal studs and metal crossbars interconnecting the studs; and a cementitious aggregate panel, one side of the metal studs being embedded in and permanently connected to the panel along the length of the studs.

Modular guard towers and methods of construction

Enclosed structures, such as guard towers, are provided which are designed to be easily transportable, constructed easily onsite and erected in a manner which produces an exceptionally blast resistant structure that is also advantageously designed for positioning within a perimeter wall. In particular, in some embodiments, the guard towers have a pentagon shape and are comprised of a plurality of composite panels. Each panel is able to be constructed onsite. The panels typically have a rectangular shape with at least one half of the panel constructed as a solid composite of concrete and metal. Once the panels are constructed, the panels are erected and arranged in a pentagon shape. The panels are bolted together with the use of vertical face connections. These connections provide better structural integrity, retained over time, particularly after subjection to a blast. In addition, the pentagon shape provides improved safety when positioned along a perimeter wall.

BLAST RESISTANT SHELTER AND METHOD OF ASSEMBLY

A method and apparatus according to which a blast resistant shelter is assembled. The blast resistant shelter includes first and second structural members, a third structural member coupled to the first and second structural members, a first airway adjacent the third structural member, and a first blast panel pivotably mounted to the third structural member and adapted to pivot thereabout in response to a blast wave. In a first configuration, the first blast panel is detachably connected to a first portion of the blast resistant shelter and prevented from pivoting about the third structural member so that the first blast panel obstructs air flow through the first airway. In a second configuration, in response to the blast wave, the first blast panel is detached from the first portion of the blast resistant shelter and permitted to pivot about the third structural member to permit air flow through the first airway.
