Point-the-bit bottom hole assembly with reamer

A method includes extending a wellbore using a drill bit that forms a portion of a bottom hole assembly; enlarging a diameter of the wellbore using a reamer of the assembly; and laterally offsetting either a rotary steerable tool or a mud motor of the assembly in the enlarged diameter wellbore. A bend angle is defined between a central axis of either the rotary steerable tool or the mud motor creates and a central axis of the drill bit. Enlarging the diameter of the wellbore using the reamer while steering the assembly decreases the dogleg. Enlarging the diameter of the wellbore using the reamer while rotational drilling a straight section of the wellbore reduces stresses on the assembly and reduces wellbore tortuosity.

Apparatus (10) and method for removing a section of well tubing. A work string including a hydraulic tensioning device (14) and a section mill (12) a run in a rigless arrangement to provide continuous upward milling of the tubing (24) by raising the work string at a desired rate of progress. The hydraulic tensioning device (14) has a lower end (34) moveable longitudinally relative to the work string by application of fluid pressure in the work string to apply a weight on the section mill. The hydraulic tensioning device includes a self-correcting mechanism (30) to maintain the lower end at a position between a fully extended position and a fully retracted position to provide continuous milling of the tubing by the section mill at a milling rate matching the rate at which the work string is lifted. Embodiments are described for use in a rigless well abandonment procedure.

Deploying material to limit losses of drilling fluid in a wellbore

Bottom hole assemblies for deploying fabric can include: a body configured to be attached to a drill pipe; a control tube disposed inside the body at a position controlled by engagement of a cam with a continuous guide path; a set tube, the set tube and the body together defining a pressure chamber with the body defining an inlet port extending between the interior cavity and pressure chamber, the set tube movable between a rolling position and a reaming position; a reamer assembly with at least one first articulated arm with extending between first attachment point on the body and the set tube; and a roller assembly with: at least one second articulated arm extending between the set tube and a second attachment point on the body; and a roller positioned at a joint of each second articulated arm.

WELLBORE UNDERREAMING

An apparatus is positioned within a wellbore in a subterranean formation. The apparatus includes a housing, a guide shaft, a follower, multiple underreamer blades, and a hydraulic chamber. The housing defines a track including multiple catch points. The guide shaft is disposed within the housing. The follower protrudes radially outward form the guide shaft and is received by the track. The follower and the track are cooperatively configured to restrict movement of the guide shaft relative to the housing. A rate of flow to the guide shaft is adjusted to adjust a relative position of the guide shaft with respect to the housing until the follower is located at one of the catch points. A pressure within the hydraulic chamber is adjusted to adjust a level of radially outward protrusion of the underreamer blades. The underreamer blades are rotated to cut into the subterranean formation.

Wellbore conditioning with a reamer on a wireline

To condition a wellbore with a reamer on a wireline, a portion of a wellbore is formed from a surface of the earth toward a subsurface hydrocarbon reservoir using a wellbore drilling assembly. After forming the portion of the wellbore, the wellbore drilling assembly is removed from the portion of the wellbore. Using a wireline, a wellbore sampling tool and a reamer are lowered into the portion of the wellbore. While maintaining the wellbore sampling tool and the wireline in a non-rotational state, the portion of the wellbore is cleaned using the reamer.

MILLING PACKERS BELOW RESTRICTIONS IN A WELLBORE CASING

Tools and methods are described for removing a packer beyond a restriction in a casing of a wellbore. A packer milling tool includes: a milling body with an outer diameter; milling blocks positioned at intervals around a circumference of the milling body, each milling block pivotably attached to the milling body and pivotable between a running position and a milling position; and a wash pipe extending from a downhole end of the milling body. The milling blocks have a rotational circumference with a rotational diameter that is less than the outer diameter of the milling body when in the running position and the rotational diameter is more than the outer diameter of the milling body and less than the inner diameter of the casing when in the milling position.

Well abandonment

Method and apparatus for removing a section of well tubing. The well tubing (24) is milled in an upward direction on a hydraulic tensioning device (14) which maintains a constant load on the section mill so that long sections of tubing can be removed in a near continuous procedure on a single trip into the well. The hydraulic device includes an indicator (30) to provide a signal as the device nears each end of a stroke to inform a user that: the section mill is about to bottom out and the work string needs to be raised to extend the device; and the device is fully extended and can begin another stroke. Embodiments are described for use in a rigless well abandonment procedure.

DRILL STRING
20210310313 · 2021-10-07 ·

A drill string for use in the directional drilling of wellbores is described. A downhole reamer apparatus (202) is mounted in a drill string incorporating a drilling motor (300), stabiliser (302) and drill bit (304) operable either by rotation of the drill string or activation of the drilling motor (300). The drill string is located in wellbore (306) at the end of drill pipe (310). If the operator wishes to drill upwardly, the reamer elements are locked in the retracted condition. This results in the reamer apparatus being under gauge which results in build angle (308) pointing the drill bit upwardly.

A downhole assembly includes a bit and a cutting tool uphole of the bit. The cutting tool has one or more expandable cutter arms. The one or more expandable cutter arms include at least one stabilizer portion having a radial position that is about the same as a gauge of the bit when the one or more expandable cutter arms are in an expanded position. A spline on the cutter arms are used by a cutting tool to move the cutter arms.
