Method and Apparatus for Setting Downhole Plugs and Other Objects in Wellbores

A wireline conveyed, gas driven setting tool configured to set downhole tools including, without limitation, frac plugs, bridge plugs, cement retainers and packers. The setting tool is functioned by selectively igniting a power charge inside of a firing head. As the power charge burns, it generates gas that acts upon a piston area to stroke the setting tool. A dampening media, as well an optimized flow area at or near the distal end of the setting tool, act to slow the setting stroke.

SINGLE USE SETTING TOOL FOR ACTUATING A TOOL IN A WELLBORE

A single use setting tool for actuating a tool in a wellbore includes an inner piston extending through a central bore of an outer sleeve. The inner piston has a seal adapter portion and a piston cavity housing an initiator holder for receiving a push-in detonator. A gas diverter channel is open to and extends from the piston cavity through an annular wall of the piston, to transfer gas pressure to a gas expansion chamber for stroking the outer sleeve. A method of actuating a wellbore tool with a single use setting tool includes inserting an initiator into the initiator holder, attaching a tandem seal adapter to the seal adapter portion of the inner piston, and relaying an electrical signal to a line-in portion of the initiator, to initiate the initiator. The single use setting tool may be used in a wellbore tool string.

SINGLE USE SETTING TOOL FOR ACTUATING A TOOL IN A WELLBORE

A single use setting tool and associated method for actuating a tool in a wellbore may include an inner piston with an annular wall defining a piston cavity. A portion of the inner piston including the piston cavity may be positioned within a central bore of an outer sleeve, and the inner piston and the outer sleeve may be slidable relative to one another. A portion of the inner piston may extend beyond an end of the outer sleeve and have a shock absorbing wedge positioned thereon, and the end of the outer sleeve may have a cutout for receiving the shock absorbing wedge. A bi-directional gas-generating power charge may be positioned in the piston cavity and include a power charge having a booster positioned in an indentation adjacent each of a first end and a second end of the power charge.

RELEASABLE CONNECTION MECHANISM FOR USE WITHIN A WELL

A releasable connection mechanism for use downhole with a tubular member includes a collet, a collet stop, and a ring housing. The collet is configured to engage the tubular member, the collet stop is axially movable with respect to the collet between a disengaged position to not engage the collet and an engaged position to engage the collet, and the ring housing is selectively axially movable with respect to the collet. In the disengaged position, the collet is configured to move with respect to the ring housing to engage the ring housing and prevent the collet from disengaging the tubular member when the collet is tensioned with respect to the tubular member. In the engaged position, the collet is configured to remain axially stationary with respect to the ring housing and disengage the tubular member when the collet is tensioned with respect to the tubular member.

Providing hydraulic fluid from a hydraulic pump to a tool connected to respective first and second ends of a wellbore linear actuator and such an actuator. The actuator has a double acting cylinder with a cylinder head, a cylinder cap opposite the cylinder head, a piston head, and a piston rod. The piston head separates the cylinder into a first chamber and a second chamber, and the piston rod extends out of the second chamber through the cylinder cap. The double acting cylinder has first and second ends, and the double acting cylinder further includes a feed fluid passage between the first and second ends, wherein the feed fluid passage includes a first fluid line through the piston head and the piston rod, the first chamber, and a second fluid line through the cylinder head. The double acting cylinder is configured for preventing said piston rod from rotating relative said cylinder bore.

ECCENTRIC LINKAGE GRIPPER

A gripper mechanism for a downhole tool is disclosed that includes an eccentric linkage mechanism. In operation, an axial force generated by a power section of the gripper expands the linkage mechanism, which applies a radial force to the interior surface of a wellbore or passage. A sliding portion allows the gripper to slide along a surface of the formation in response to the radial force applied to the interior surface of the wellbore or passage.

Methods And Assemblies For Running And Testing Tools

Assemblies and methods are provided for positioning a sealing tool within a receptacle and pressure testing a seal between the sealing tool and the receptacle. The assembly may be coupled to the sealing tool for latching the sealing tool into the receptacle. The assembly may include a projection that is movable between a coupled position and an uncoupled position. In the coupled position, the projection may couple the assembly to the sealing tool. In the uncoupled position, the projection may be positioned such that the assembly is not coupled to the sealing tool. The projection may move from the coupled position to the uncoupled position in response to determining a seal is established between the sealing tool and the receptacle.

Downhole tool with multi-stage anchoring

A downhole tool includes a tool body and an anchoring device integrated with the tool body. The anchoring device includes a contact pad that is at least partially external to the tool body, the contact pad having multiple stages with different thicknesses. The anchoring tool also includes a first linear actuator and a second linear actuator. The first linear actuator is configured to move the contact pad axially with respect to the tool body to align one of the multiple stages with the second linear actuator. The second linear actuator is configured to apply a radial force to the contact pad.
