The Spring-Loaded Self-Adjusting Stuffing Box
20220098953 · 2022-03-31 ·

An improved wellhead stuffing box device is disclosed, having a coil spring, between a loading plate and the packing members of a stuffing box, and a housing threaded over the loading plate and the coil spring onto the outer wall of the stuffing box. The loading plate is adjacent the coil spring, which applies constant pressure on the packing members, causing the packing members to bulge continuously, as they wear out, thereby maintaining a seal between the packing members and a polish rod while in operation through the life of the packing members. The loading plate may be adjusted to adjust the spring force in the coil spring. The entire assembly has an aperture through its central longitudinal axis for the polish rod to oscillate there through. Embodiments include a stuffing box with an improved stuffing box cap.

An apparatus includes a non-rotating housing, a rotatable member rotatably supported in the non-rotating housing and a bearing adapter sleeve disposed externally to the non-rotating housing. The bearing adapter sleeve has an internal upset for limiting longitudinal movement of the non-rotating housing. The bearing adapter sleeve has a retaining ring affixed to a longitudinal end of the bearing adapter sleeve to limit longitudinal movement of the non-rotating housing.

Rotating control device with cooling mandrel

A removable cooling mandrel assembly for a rotating control device for use in a drilling system. The present disclosure provides an outer swivel housing enclosing an elongate passage and connected to the uppermost end of an upper housing of the rotating control device. An inner swivel mandrel is mounted in the elongate passage of the outer swivel housing for rotation relative to the outer swivel housing and may be connected to an RCD mandrel of the rotating control device to which the outer swivel housing is connected. A tubular cooling mandrel extends from the inner swivel mandrel out of the outer swivel housing to reduce operating temperatures thereby increasing bearing performance and life and seal life.

A rotating control device can include a latch assembly with a lock ring that permits displacement of an inner mandrel in one longitudinal direction, and prevents displacement of the inner mandrel in an opposite longitudinal direction. Another rotating control device can include a latch assembly and an equalization valve having an open configuration in which fluid communication is permitted between an exterior and an interior of the rotating control device through the equalization valve, the latch assembly changing from a latched to an unlatched configuration only when the equalization valve is in the open configuration. A method of installing a rotating control device can include releasing a running tool from the rotating control device by producing relative rotation between components of the running tool.

Sealing element wear indicator system

A seal assembly for use in a pressure containment device for containing a fluid pressure in an annular space around a drill string whilst allowing the drill string to rotate in the pressure containment device. The seal assembly includes a seal with an inner surface and a tubular body, and a wear sensor embedded in the tubular body of the seal. The wear sensor emits an alert signal when the inner surface of the seal has been worn away by a first preset amount. The alert signal includes a pressure signal and/or a chemical signal.
