Downhole swivel apparatus and method

What is provided is a method and apparatus which can be detachably connected to an annular blowout preventer thereby separating the drilling fluid or mud into upper and lower sections and allowing the fluid to be displaced in two stages, such as while the drill string is being rotated and/or reciprocated. In one embodiment the sleeve can be rotatably and sealably connected to a mandrel. The swivel can be incorporated into a drill or well string and enabling string sections both above and below the sleeve to be rotated in relation to the sleeve. In one embodiment the drill or well string does not move in a longitudinal direction relative to the swivel. In one embodiment, the drill or well string does move longitudinally relative to the sleeve of the swivel.

Latching assembly

A latching assembly has a tubular housing having an outer surface and an inner surface that defines an inner bore. Latch members are carried by the housing that have a latch position that extends out from the outer surface and a release position that is retracted from the latch position. A plurality of gripping members are pivotally attached to the housing. The gripping members are pivotally attached to the tubular housing and move between a gripping position wherein the gripping members extend into the inner bore and a retracted position. An actuator engages the latch members and the gripping members and moves between a first position and a second position. The actuator moves the latch members from the latch position to the release position and the gripping members from the retracted position to the gripping position as the actuator moves from the first position to the second position.

MUD TELEMETRY WITH ROTATING CONTROL DEVICE

An example rotating control device may include a bearing assembly with at least one rotating seal and a pressure modulator coupled to the bearing assembly. A controller may be communicably coupled to the pressure modulator. The pressure modulator may be at least one of a mud pulser, a mud siren, and a pressure transducer. The pressure transducer may be a piezoelectric transducer.

STUFFING BOX LOOSENING DEVICE AND METHOD

A stuffing box loosening device for loosening a locking collar securing a stuffing box to a well head. The device includes a rotatable clamping tool having a clamp securable to an external surface of the locking collar. The clamp prevents relative rotational movement between itself and the locking collar. A force-receiving body extends away from the clamp. A main frame has a mounting portion securable to the well head, and the mounting portion prevents relative rotational movement between the main frame and the well head. A force-supporting body is attached to the mounting portion. An actuator is mounted to the force-supporting body and in operation extends to displace a second end to engage the force-receiving body of the clamping tool and apply a force thereto. The force rotates the clamp to loosen the locking collar.

MPD-capable flow spools

This disclosure includes flow spool riser segment assemblies that are suitable for managed pressure drilling (MPD) and that can be lowered (e.g., when connected to other riser segment assemblies) through a rotary of a drilling rig. Some embodiments are configured to have portions of the flow spool connected (e.g., without welding) below the rotary.

Sealing element wear detection for wellbore devices

A system is provided that can include a rotating control device (RCD) with a sealing element and a force measurement device for measuring an axial force imparted to the sealing element. The system can also include a computing device that is communicatively coupled to the force measurement device for receiving the axial force measurements and from which the wear status of the sealing element can be determined.

A rotating control device can include a latch assembly with a lock ring that permits displacement of an inner mandrel in one longitudinal direction, and prevents displacement of the inner mandrel in an opposite longitudinal direction. Another rotating control device can include a latch assembly and an equalization valve having an open configuration in which fluid communication is permitted between an exterior and an interior of the rotating control device through the equalization valve, the latch assembly changing from a latched to an unlatched configuration only when the equalization valve is in the open configuration. A method of installing a rotating control device can include releasing a running tool from the rotating control device by producing relative rotation between components of the running tool.
