Variable hinge and method of adjusting the same

A hinge includes a first hinge member including a first barrel, a second hinge member including a first end barrel opposite a second end barrel, a spring having a first axially extending end and a second axially extending end opposite the first axially extending end, a spring tensioner having a first depression for receiving the first axially extending end of the spring and a second depression for receiving a driver. A retainer is coupled to the spring tensioner and includes an opening that is penetrable by the driver when the driver is being received in the second depression. A method of adjusting the hinge includes compressing an end of the spring and twisting the same.

A second pair of fasteners may extend between the second front and rear leaf components and through the pair of holes in the second panel to clamp the portion of the second panel to the second leaf assembly. A spring may be coupled to the first and second leaf assemblies to bias the first and second leaf assemblies to move from an open position to a closed position. A dampener having a longitudinal axis may slow movement of the first and second leaf assemblies to the closed position, wherein the longitudinal axis of the dampener is located between the hinge axis and the first panel.

A dampened hinge assembly has a male leaf and a female leaf. The female leaf has spaced apart first and second end barrels coaxially rotating with respect to a central barrel of the male leaf therebetween. An axial shaft is fixed to the second end barrel of the female leaf at a proximal end of the axial shaft. The axial shaft has a distal helicoidally threaded spindle. A compression gear having a helicoidally threaded bore matching the helicoidal thread of the spindle displaces towards the first end barrel when the leaves move into alignment and towards the second end barrel when the leaves move out of alignment. The dampened hinge assembly may be reconfigured to provide soft closure, end-of-range soft closure and/or backcheck damping.
