Annular pressure cap drilling method
11255144 · 2022-02-22 · ·

Disclosed herein are various embodiments of methods and systems for drilling an oil or gas well safely and efficiently using underbalanced or near-balanced drilling techniques, wherein the primary means of pressure control is a Annular Pressure Control Diverter positioned below the BOP stack, with a return flow pattern where no drilling fluid returns up the (traditional) annulus between the drill pipe and the production casing and instead drilling fluid returns up the annulus between the production casing and intermediate casing. Drilling fluid returns flow through a wellhead, instead of a flow spool conventionally located below an upper RCD, and hence to the drilling choke. This drilling approach eliminates the need for hydraulic fracturing and preserves the natural fracture system of the producing formation while providing additional safety measures. It also prevents the accidental or deliberate discharge or flaring of methane during drilling and production.

This disclosure includes auxiliary-line riser segment assemblies (e.g., with isolation units) that are suitable for managed pressure drilling (MPD) and that can be lowered (e.g., when connected to other riser segment assemblies) through a rotary of a drilling rig. Some embodiments are configured to have portions of the auxiliary lines connected (e.g., without welding) below the rotary.

ROTATING CONTROL DEVICE

An RCD includes a housing, a seal assembly package, and a seal tube assembly. The seal tube assembly includes a seal tube, a seal, a first bearing, and a second bearing. The seal is coupled between the first and second bearings. The first bearing includes a flow path between the interior of the seal tube and the annular space between the seal and the seal tube. The SAP includes an SAP outer body positioned within the housing and fluidly sealed thereto. The RCD may include a running tool coupled to the SAP having one or more grippers for engaging a tool string passing through the RCD.

DOWNHOLE SWIVEL APPARATUS AND METHOD

What is provided is a method and apparatus which can be detachably connected to an annular blowout preventer thereby separating the drilling fluid or mud into upper and lower sections and allowing the fluid to be displaced in two stages, such as while the drill string is being rotated and/or reciprocated. In one embodiment the sleeve can be rotatably and sealably connected to a mandrel. The swivel can be incorporated into a drill or well string and enabling string sections both above and below the sleeve to be rotated in relation to the sleeve. In one embodiment the drill or well string does not move in a longitudinal direction relative to the swivel. In one embodiment, the drill or well string does move longitudinally relative to the sleeve of the swivel.

System and method for controlling annular well pressure

A fast-acting managed pressure drilling rig is disclosed. A main valve configured as an alternative for a conventional rotating control device is provided to control drilling of a wellbore. A second valve is configured to trap pressure in the wellbore. A choke valve maintains well bottomhole pressure within specified limits by trapping pressure or by releasing trapped pressure within the wellbore. A pressure relief choke is configured to provide fine pressure stability control within the well and to act as a pressure relief valve in response to wellbore overpressure. A controller is configured with at least one processor to affect operation of the main valve, the second ratio valve, the choke valve, and the pressure relief choke in response to information received by the controller representing operation of the managed pressure drilling rig.

LATCH POSITION INDICATOR SYSTEM AND METHOD

Latch position indicator systems remotely determine whether a latch assembly is latched or unlatched. The latch assembly may be a single latch assembly or a dual latch assembly. An oilfield device may be positioned with the latch assembly. Non-contact (position), contact (on/off and/or position) and hydraulic (flowmeter), both direct and indirect, embodiments include fluid measurement systems, an electrical switch system, a mechanical valve system, and proximity sensor systems.

FRICTIONAL SUPPORT OF SEAL BORE PROTECTOR

A seal bore protector for protecting a seal bore of a rotating control device (RCD) is provided. The seal bore protector includes a cylindrical body, a throughbore extending through the cylindrical body, and a sealing element disposed around an external surface of the cylindrical body. The sealing element includes a first sealing ring, a second sealing ring, and a sealed area between the first sealing ring and the second sealing ring. The sealed area is fluidly coupled with a port when the seal bore protector is installed in the rotating control device.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ASSEMBLING A BLOWOUT PREVENTER

An assembly tool for assembling a blowout preventer including a hub configured for releasably coupling with a hydraulic package of the blowout preventer, a support ring coupled to the hub, wherein the support ring is configured for releasably coupling with an outer housing of the blowout preventer, and a first seating assembly coupled to the hub, wherein the first seating assembly is configured to apply a force against the hydraulic package to seat the hydraulic package within the outer housing, and react the force applied to the hydraulic package against the outer housing.

Connector assembly for connecting a hose to a tubular

A connector assembly for connecting a hose to a tubular element. The connector assembly includes a housing, a hose connector, and a latch. The housing encloses a main passage which is parallel to a longitudinal axis of the housing and which has a side passage extending through the housing from an exterior of the housing into the main passage. The side passage extends through a connector tube mounted on an exterior of the housing. A hose connector is secured to an end of the hose and engages with the connector tube to connect the hose to the tubular element. The hose connector comprises a pipe portion which mates with the connector tube to connect an interior of the hose to the side passage. The latch urges the connector tube and the pipe portion into engagement and prevents a separation thereof.

Rotating control device with multiple seal cartridge

The disclosure relates to a rotating control device used in a drilling system having a non-rotating tubular RCD housing enclosing an elongate passage. A mandrel rotatably extends along the passage about an axis. A seal assembly seals the RCD housing to the mandrel and provides first and second seals against the mandrel's exterior surface. The first and second seals are spaced parallel to the mandrel's axis to create space between the mandrel and the first and second seals. The first seal has a first side exposed to fluid pressure in the RCD housing and a second side exposed to fluid in the space between the seals. The second seal has a first side exposed to fluid pressure in the space between the seals and a second side exposed to fluid pressure at the exterior of the RCD housing. A pressure stepping mechanism supplies fluid to the space between the two seals.
