Methods of making a polycrystalline diamond compact including a polycrystalline diamond table with a thermally-stable region having at least one low-carbon-solubility material

Embodiments of the invention relate to polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDCs) comprising a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) table including a thermally-stable region having at least one low-carbon-solubility material disposed interstitially between bonded diamond grains thereof, and methods of fabricating such PDCs. In an embodiment, a PDC includes a substrate, and a PCD table bonded to the substrate. The PCD table includes a plurality of diamond grains exhibiting diamond-to-diamond bonding therebetween and defining a plurality of interstitial regions. The PCD table further includes at least one low-carbon-solubility material disposed in at least a portion of the plurality of interstitial regions. The at least one low-carbon-solubility material exhibits a melting temperature of about 1300 C. or less and a bulk modulus at 20 C. of less than about 150 GPa.

A drill bit for drilling a borehole in an earthen formation has a central axis and a cutting direction of rotation. The bit includes a bit body configured to rotate about the axis in the cutting direction of rotation. The bit body includes a bit face. The bit also includes a blade extending radially along the bit face. In addition, the bit includes a first cutter element mounted to a cutter-supporting surface of the blade and a second cutter element mounted to the cutter-supporting surface of the blade. The first cutter element has a central axis and includes a first forward-facing cutting face including a first cutting tip distal the cutter supporting surface and a first planar surface extending radially from the first cutting tip toward the central axis of the first cutter element. The first planar surface is oriented at a first effective backrake angle measured between the cutter supporting surface and a surface vector of the first planar surface. The second cutter element has a central axis and comprises a second forward-facing cutting face including a second cutting tip distal the cutter supporting surface and a second planar surface extending radially from the second cutting tip toward the central axis of the second cutter element. The second planar surface is oriented at a second effective backrake angle measured between the cutter supporting surface and a surface vector of the second planar surface. The second effective backrake angle is greater than the first effective backrake angle.

A cutting element for a drill bit is advanceable into a subterranean formation to form a wellbore. The cutting element includes an element body having a face at an end thereof, and a ridge. The element body has a face at an end thereof. The face has a ramp and a pair of side regions thereon. The ramp has a curved edge along a periphery of the face and two sides. Each of the two sides extends from opposite ends of the curved edge and converges at a location along the face. The face has a chamfer along a peripheral edge thereof. The ridge is between the chamfer and the location. Each of the pair of side regions is positioned on opposite sides of the ridge and extends between the periphery, the ridge, and one of the two sides of the ramp whereby the chamfer engages a wall of the wellbore and extrudate is drawn along the pair of side regions.

CUTTER ASSEMBLY WITH AT LEAST ONE ISLAND AND A METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A CUTTER ASSEMBLY

A cutter assembly includes a substrate and at least one island. The substrate includes a surface circumscribed by a peripheral edge, a flank surface extending from the peripheral edge, and at least one pocket with an opening on the surface and spaced apart from the peripheral edge. The at least one pocket extends from the opening towards an interior of the substrate. The at least one island is in the at least one pocket, and the at least one island includes a cutting surface that is exposed by the opening of the at least one pocket.

Thick pointed superhard material

In one aspect of the invention, a high impact resistant tool includes a superhard material bonded to a cemented metal carbide substrate at a non-planar interface. The superhard material has a substantially pointed geometry with a sharp apex having a radius of curvature of 0.050 to 0.125 inches. The superhard material also has a thickness of 0.100 to 0.500 inches thickness from the apex to a central region of the cemented metal carbide substrate.

A cutter assembly for a cutting tool has a super-hard volume of super-hard material having a proximal end and a distal end and including a cavity; and a cover member. The super-hard volume has a super-hard surface at the distal end including a cutting edge. The cavity has a cavity open end at the distal end. The super-hard surface includes a cavity peripheral area coterminous with the cavity open end and the cover member has a cover peripheral area configured to mate with the cavity peripheral area to allow the cover member to cover the cavity at the cavity open end, the covered cavity providing a housing chamber within the super-hard volume. A method of making a cutter assembly is also disclosed.

DRILL BIT CUTTER ELEMENTS WITH MULTIPLE SURFACE FINISHES

A cutter element for a fixed cutter drill bit has a central axis and includes a cylindrical substrate and a cutting layer mounted to the substrate. The cutting layer includes a first end engaged with the substrate, a second end opposite the first end, and a radially outer surface extending axially between the first and second ends. In addition, the cutting layer includes a cutting surface positioned at the second end and a cutting tip positioned between the cutting surface and the radially outer surface. Further, the cutting layer includes a first region on the cutting surface having a first surface roughness, and a second region on the cutting surface having a second surface roughness that is higher than the first surface roughness. The second region covers the central axis along the cutting surface, and the first region extends from the second region to the cutting tip.

A cutting element may include an ultrahard layer bonded to the substrate, the ultrahard layer formed from an ultrahard material, the ultrahard layer including: a side surface adjacent to the base, the side surface including a plurality of cutting surfaces; and an upper surface extending into the ultrahard layer.

A polycrystalline composite tool component and associated methods are disclosed. In one example plurality of diamond particles are coated with a conforming catalyst metal coating and a plurality of graphene particles. Various asymmetric distributions of graphene particles are shown that provide a variety of material properties.
