20200400353 · 2020-12-24 ·

A system is described herein for repurposing waste heat from a refrigeration cycle to improve the efficiency of the cycle and power electronic devices. The system may include a compressor, a turbine, an accumulator, a condenser, a throttle, and an evaporator. The accumulator may include a high-pressure chamber connected between the turbine and condenser, and a low-pressure chamber connected between the evaporator and the compressor. The high-pressure chamber may be segregated from the low-pressure chamber such that high-pressure refrigerant in the high-pressure chamber is prevented from mixing with low-pressure refrigerant in the low-pressure chamber. The high-pressure chamber and low-pressure chamber may be thermally coupled such that liquid refrigerant in the low-pressure chamber is vaporized by heat exchange with the high-pressure chamber. The turbine may power an electronic component of the refrigerator or may feed electricity back into a community grid power system.

EXPANSION TURBINE

An expansion turbine configured such that even when pressure of process gas steeply changes, the amount of process gas leaking from a gap between an impeller and a cover is made small. The expansion turbine includes a gas supply passage which is connected to any one of a gas supply passage and a gas discharge passage and through which gas is supplied to a region located between a rotor member and a casing member.

Inlet air cooling system and inlet air cooling method for gas turbine

An inlet air cooling system used in a gas turbine for supplying power to a refrigerant compressor for compressing refrigerant in a natural gas liquefaction plant includes: an inlet air cooler for cooling inlet air of the gas turbine; chiller motors used for a chiller for cooling coolant supplied to the inlet air cooler; a first variable speed driver for supplying electric power to each of the one or more chiller motors; and an electric generator driven by the gas turbine, wherein the electric generator is electrically connected to the first variable speed driver, and electric power generated by the electric generator can be supplied to each of the chiller motors from the first variable speed driver without using a main power line of an electric power system, which enables efficient electric power supply to the motors via the variable speed driver.

Non-horizontal water extractor

A water extractor includes a body with an outer wall, an inlet, an outlet, a first centerline axis, an inner nozzle, an outer chamber, a serpentine channel, a pocket, and a boss. The first centerline axis extends through a center of the body, the outlet, and the inlet. The inner nozzle is co-axial with the first centerline axis. The outer chamber extends between the outer wall and the inner nozzle. The serpentine channel fluidly connects the inlet and the outer chamber. The pocket is fluidly connected to a portion of the outer chamber and is configured to collect water from the outer chamber. The boss extends from and is fluidly connected to the pocket. The boss includes a second centerline axis at an angle with the first centerline axis of approximately 10 degrees or greater.

DUAL TURBINE THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (TMS)
20200108937 · 2020-04-09 · ·

A thermal management system for an aircraft engine. The thermal management system extracts interstage engine bleed air from the engine's compressor and performs three stage cooling of the interstage engine bleed air using two heat exchangers and a vapor cycle system evaporator. The cooled air is then further cooled by expansion through a set of turbines and subsequently used as a heat sink for heat loads on the aircraft.

A centrifugal compressor to be used in a chiller system includes a casing, an impeller, a motor and a diffuser. The casing has an inlet portion and an outlet portion. The impeller is attached to a shaft rotatable about a rotation axis, and has an impeller shroud which encloses the impeller. The motor rotates the shaft in order to rotate the impeller. The diffuser is disposed in the outlet portion downstream of the impeller. The centrifugal compressor further includes a seal bearing. The seal bearing is attached to the inlet portion to seal the impeller shroud, and rotatably supports the impeller and the shaft.

Cryogenic power extraction

Various examples are provided for cryogenic power extraction. In one example, among others, a system for cryogenic power extraction includes a heat exchanger that can heat a cryogenic working fluid using exhaust heat from a heat source, and a turbine that can generate power from the heated cryogenic working fluid. In another example, a method includes heating a cryogenic working fluid with waste heat from a heat source and driving a turbine with the heated cryogenic working fluid.
