Electrically Latching Rocker Arm Assembly Having Built-In OBD Functionality
An internal combustion engine includes a cam-actuated rocker arm assembly with a solenoid-actuated latch that provides for cylinder deactivation or variable valve actuation. The solenoid is in a position where its inductance varies significantly in relation to the position of a latch pin as it translates between latching and non-latching configurations. A sensor is positioned to monitor a current or a voltage in a circuit that includes the solenoid. The sensor data is analyzed to provide diagnostic information relating to the operation of the rocker arm assembly.
Internal combustion piston engine for aviation
An internal combustion engine for use with a propeller driven aircraft includes a camshaft adapted to function as an output shaft that rotates a propeller to provide propulsive thrust. A gear set is configured to transfer rotational power from the crankshaft to the camshaft and to rotate the camshaft at a velocity that is proportional to the rotational velocity of the crankshaft. The gear set is disposed rearward of the engine housing rearward wall and is configured to rotate the camshaft in a direction opposite the crankshaft rotation. The length of the camshaft reduces engine torsional vibration. In one embodiment, the engine is a six-cylinder compression ignition engine having a boxer configuration and can generate a peak output power within a range from about 300 horsepower to about 350 horsepower.
Valve operating system providing variable valve lift and/or variable valve timing
A valve operating system that includes a plurality of cam assemblies that are coupled for rotation about a rotary axis. Each of the cam assemblies has a control link and a first cam member. Each of the control links has a link body, which forms a majority of the control link, and that extends parallel to the rotary axis. Each of the first cam members is coupled to one of the control links for axial movement therewith along the rotary axis between first and second positions to alternate between first and second cam profiles, respectively.
DECELERATION CYLINDER CUTOFF SYSTEM INCLUDING SMART PHASER
An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder and a valve assembly configured to activate and deactivate the at least one cylinder. The valve assembly includes an intake valve configured to control air flow into the at least one cylinder. A controller outputs a first control signal to the valve assembly to deactivate the at least one cylinder in response to detecting a deceleration event. The controller also outputs a second control signal to command the valve assembly to delay opening the intake valve from a closed position after re-activating the cylinder so that the torque output produced in response to re-activating the cylinder is reduced.
EPhaser cushion stop
A variable camshaft timing device adjusts phase between a camshaft and a crankshaft and includes a first ring gear configured to connect to the camshaft and rotate about a center axis, having a plurality of radially-inwardly facing gear teeth; a second ring gear axially spaced from the first ring gear, configured to receive rotational input from the crankshaft and rotate about the center axis, having a plurality of radially-inwardly facing gear teeth; a planetary gear assembly including one or more planet gears that are configured for rotation by an electric motor and engage the first ring gear and the second ring gear through the planet gear(s); and a cushioned stop configured to transmit energy between the planetary gear assembly and a planetary gear stop attached to a sprocket or a camshaft plate.
Internal combustion engine
In an internal combustion engine including a driving-sprocket cam chain guide 70 for guiding a cam chain 47 along a driving sprocket 45, as viewed in a crankshaft axial direction, a guide body 71 of the driving-sprocket cam chain guide 70 extends beyond a winding termination point P of the cam chain 47 on the driving sprocket 45 to a position adjacent to a chain moving surface 51c of a cam chain tensioner 51, on which the cam chain 47 slides. The engine provides a cam-chain dropout preventing function to the cam chain guide, thus reducing load on the cam chain tensioner and improving durability of the tensioner lifter.
Gear device, camshaft adjuster having the gear device, and internal combustion engine
The invention relates to a gear device for a motor vehicle, as is used, for example, for adjusting a camshaft in a combustion engine in order to influence the phase angle between crankshaft and camshaft. Such gear devices have to be constructed compactly and also have to have high resistance to wear, in particular upon reaching end stops during adjustment of the phase angle. For this purpose, the gear device has hydraulic end stop damping by the drive unit and the output unit having communicating cavities.
SYNCHRONOUS DRIVE APPARATUS WITH ADJUSTABLE NON-CIRCULAR DRIVE ELEMENTS
A synchronous drive is provided in which a non-circular rotor generates a fluctuating corrective torque to counteract a fluctuating load torque on a driven rotor. The angular orientation of the non-circular rotor can vary relative to the driven rotor so as to change the phase angle of the fluctuating corrective torque relative to the driving rotor. The arrangement may be applied in internal combustion engines with variable valve timing (VVT) systems, wherein the phase angle of a fluctuating load torque presented on a cam rotor, due to forces arising from actuation of intake and/or exhaust valves by the camshaft, varies relative to the crankshaft. The phase angle of the fluctuating corrective torque is also varied relative to the crankshaft to maintain phase relationship with the fluctuating load torque and thereby maintain reduced cam torsional vibrations and span tensions provided by the non-circular rotor during operation
Camschaft for internal combustion engine
In a camshaft for an internal combustion engine, integrally including: a shaft main portion that extends linearly; a plurality of valve-actuating cams disposed to be spaced apart from each other in an axial direction of the shaft main portion; and a pair of support arms extending along one diametric line of the shaft main portion radially outwardly from one end part of the shaft main portion and being fitted with a follower rotational body, a pair of overhangs are integrated with the shaft main portion and the pair of support arms, the overhangs extending between the support arms in a peripheral direction of the shaft main portion, and a thick-wall portion having a larger thickness in a direction along an axis of the shaft main portion is formed in part, on a radially outer side of the shaft main portion, of each of the overhangs.
VARIABLE TRAVEL VALVE APPARATUS FOR AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
An apparatus includes a valve and an actuator. The valve has a portion movably disposed within a valve pocket defined by a cylinder head of an engine. The valve is configured to move relative to the cylinder head a distance between a closed position and an opened position. The portion of the valve defines a flow opening that is in fluid communication with a cylinder of an engine when the valve is in the opened position. The actuator is configured to selectively vary the distance between the closed position and the opened position.
