Variable Heat Rejection Device

A heat rejection system that employs temperature sensitive shape memory materials to control the heat rejection capacity of a vehicle to maintain a safe vehicle temperature. The technology provides for a wide range of heat rejection rates by actuation of the orientation or position of a heat rejection panel which impacts effective properties of the heat rejection system in response to temperature. When employed as a radiator for crewed spacecraft thermal control this permits the use of higher freezing point, non-toxic thermal working fluids in single-loop thermal control systems for crewed vehicles in space and other extraterrestrial environments.

Apparatus and method to facilitate heat transfer fluid flow are disclosed herein. A flexible tube having first and second ends facilitates a heat transfer fluid to flow from the first end to the second end. Ferromagnetic material encircles at least an outside portion of a length of the flexible tube, and a plurality of coil windings encircles the ferromagnetic material. The flexible tube is to be compressed to reduce an amount of flow of the heat transfer fluid from the first end to the second end by expansion of the ferromagnetic material around the flexible tube, in response to an application of a current to the plurality of coil windings.

PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER

The plate heat exchanger and method for manufacturing a plate heat exchanger comprise a stack of heat transfer plates, with first and second flow channels arranged between the plates. Pairs of heat transfer plates form cells. A cell comprises inner spacing elements arranged between the heat transfer plates leaving open a first inlet opening and a first outlet opening for the one of the fluids. The cell also comprises outer spacing elements welded to the heat transfer plates on the sides of the heat transfer plates facing away from each other. The cells are stacked against each other and joined together by welding via the outer spacing elements. The plate heat exchanger further comprises cover plates for covering sides of the stack of heat transfer plates with interruption for an inlet port section formed by the first inlet openings and an outlet port section formed by the first outlet openings. The two first sides of the cell comprising the first inlet opening or the first outlet opening comprise leakage passageways provided between the heat transfer plates for the one of the fluids, in addition to the passages provided by the first inlet opening and the first outlet opening.
